SPENDS THIRD DAY IX COUNTY PRISON Yesterday was John "Watts Crocker's third day in the Richland courfty jail and he had a haggard look when seen by a reporter. Crocker is hold- 1 ing fast to the claim that he did noi * r fire the shots that ended the life of the Rev. Vincent Davis at the almshouse last Sunday morning. The The prisoner talks freely on any stib7 H J* ; ject, when the killing of Mr. Davis'is mentioned he "tightens up" and says he has nothing to say. Crocker was lying on his cot cell when the reporter arrived anta loud call was necessary to bring him to his feet. The aged prisoner walked with unsteady stride to the corridor, where he stood with a grasp ori^ the iron bars. The prisoner was asked how he felt and he said he was not feeling so well. He was asked if he suffered from the effects of rheumatism and he replied, "J\'o, sir; I nave Deen ai^licted with a case of pellagra.'*'/ jj Crocker was told that the coroner's ijiury had ordered him held for the filling of Mr. Davis and he was givpn-. in opportunity of making a statemerit. The prisoner was asked it" he had been in trouble before and he raised his right hand in the air and said: "I am a law abiding citizen and have always been such. This is the first time I ever was in trouble and the first ' ?.^ll in ** time l ever occupie-u u. Crocker made no effort to disclaim I ownership of the . CS caliber hammerless pistol taken from him shortly after the tragedy occurred Sunday morning. He was asked if he had shot any hogs at the home for Superintendent Davis and he said "yes." "Well. J Mr. Davis knew you had a pistol," j suggested the reporter, and Crocker] replied, "Of Course he did." Continu- J ing, the prisoner said, "I killed a nurn- j ber of hogs while I was at the home." j Crocker was told that he own^d a' first class revolver, and he replied, ' "Yes, I bought the gun in Spartan- 1 burg a number of years ago"* . v In answer .to questions, Crocker ;?&ifU he was born* in fSpartanburg co^fe' and reared at' Obendale.
