BOLL. WEEVILS WILL < l " BE THICK IN 1922. ; (By B. R. Coad.) Cotton farmers are now busy arguing pro and son the advisability of reducing or increasing the cotton acreage for 1922, but in the numerous arguments quoted we seldom see any mention made of one of the most important factors which should have a very positive influence on the cotton program for the coming season. This is the prospect of boll weevil abundance. For quite a number of years the Delta Laboratory of the Bureau of Entomology, U. S. Department of Agriculture has been making a series cf studies each season to serve as a basis for predictions regarding the . m m.l t.T ?/ ?n,?I ?-* n* Infnctl.lnn nf l.nll ' VVCIil/ VI illfe UL WUII weevils. The records (or 1922 have just been completed and for comparison with these we have similar records for the past eight years. The number of boll weevils emerging from hibernation each spring dei.ends on two things; the number entering hibernation in the fall and the percentage of these surviving. Last i:.ll the majority of the cotton belt , saw conditions which permitted an unusually large number of weevils to enter hibernation. The winter weather nas generally been abnori mally mild to date and. the usual period of severe weather has passed although there is of course still a i bare chance of temperature low j enough to influence weevil survival. Because of this mild weather a high rate of weevil survival was to be ex- ! ; ' pected. Our recent records have more than verified this expectation. These records are made in a number of different ways but the mcst comparable criterion is the figure based on the number of live weevils found hibernating in Spanish moss in certain S selected localities in Louisiana each year. During the past few days we have examined over 3600 pounds of Spanish moss from 15 different selected points repreesnting the different types of hibernating conditions found in that district. This moss is carefully examined and the number of weevils both live and dead noted. From this we compute the ratio of both live and dead weevils per ton of moss, and past experience has shown that this affords a very fair ind&x to the e'mergence which may be expected. The following table shows the figures for the past eight years! Live WeevUs Dead Weevils Tear per ton of moss per ton of moss 1915 10.0 414.0 J916 24.0 136.0 1917 8.0 144.0 1918 1.7 48.9 ' 1919 4.0 53.0 1920 9.5 15.8 ? I 1 1921 22.0 2G.0 1922 .127.0 2.2 From these figures it is seen that we have far more live weevils per ton of moss in sight now than at any time since these records were started and only a very few dead weevils. Of course the records on the presence of dead weevils cannot he accepted as too accurate because it has been found that many dead weevils fall out of the moss during the winter and are thus lost. The most striking feature, however, is the fact that the records for this year show more than five times as many live weevils in hibernation as in the highest preceeding year since 1915. These records are checked in other ways, among the different methods being a series of cages located near Tallulah, Louisiana which aTe Installed with a.known number of live weevils each fall, different types of shelter provided and the snrvtvnl nf uroovlio in ?"?"? determined in the spring. We have just Completed an examination of this series of cages and find that these figures verify those quoted in the moss examinations, and show* the percentage of survival todate to be much higher than in past years.
