Uih ;i) Dillon, Feb. 21.-Fire here about 3 o'clock this morning which start ed in the store occupied by David Fass and spread to other buildings, caus ed damiege of considerably more than $50,000 with insurance of $56,000 re ported. The fire was discovered in the dry goods store occupied by David Fass and before the fire depart ment' could make any headway the entire two-story building was gutted. The rear of the bu'lding wan occupied by Charlie Saleeby which was a con nection with Saleeby's large grocery store and did considerable damage to - the whole stock and suffired. 'On the left of the building oc cupied by Fass was a large store building owned by L. Cottingham. The high wall dividing the two stores during the process of the fire fell upon the roof of the Cottingham store, crushing in the roof, the spread of which caused the whole wall to fall. 0. W. Jacobson occupied the Cotting ham building and carried a stock valued at $30,000 or more. This stock as well as the store building, is in ruins from both fire and water. Fass' damage is unknown reported insurance being $21,000. The Salee by building damage is estimated at $15,000, 'insurance $8,000. Salee by's stock damage was very severe, insurance being $4,000. L. Cotting ham's store damage was estimat ed at $12,000 with $8,000 insurance. 0. W. Jackson's estimated damage was $20,000, with insurance of $15, 000. TEXT OF McGHEE BILL Columbia, Feb. 21.-The substitute bill providing for an income tax bas e don the McGhee amendment to the original bill, and prepared by a select Senate committee, was introduced to night shortly before the Senate ad journed, and attached to it was the minority report by Senator Padgett of 'Colleton. It provides for a levy or 25 per cent of the present federal in come tax. C., Feb. 21. - Last Monday night, February 13th, 1 Clemson met and defeated the College of Charleston in a basketball' game that was really one-sided, Clemson' - running up a total of 35 points while v her opponents made but 8. The game e was played in the new gymnasium - which has just recently been built. On Tuesday night' the Citadel t quintet journeyed to Clemson to do - battle with the "Tigers" and again i Clemson was victor, this time by the - narrow margin of 20 to 19. Both teams were intent on having a victory - and the teams were as evenly match 1 ed as could be found anywhere. The D scores remained almost the same :1 throughout the entire game and it was not until after the final whistle blew that a victory for the "Tigers" - was assured. e Last week the February issue of the 1 "Chronicle" appeared. This issue s contained some splendid short stories, - poems, essays, etc., and came well - within reach of the "Faculty Number" r of January. The Sophomore dance, given '.--re - last Friday night by the Sophom-re r Dancing Club was quite' a success in r every way and attracted many men r bers of the younger set from the - nearby towns. e For the past two weeks, basketball c games between the various companies - have been played and each time the 1 winners of the regimental champion e ship have been given free "movie" - tickets, also the members of the com 1 pany whose team won the champion ship were each given free tickets. Both times the championship was won v by cflnpany "B". r On last Friday night, February 17, 1 Clemson defeated Georgetown in a i basketball game played at George town, Kentucky, by a score of 34 to - 28. 1 The track meets, which were - scheduled for last week, had to be . postponed until a later date due to the inclemency of the weather the first of last week. These meets, t which are to be held solely for the purpose of developing a winning track team for the 1922 season, will, doubt less, be scheduled sometime in the I near future. Athletics are now on the bonm around the hills of Clemson. With baseball well under way, tr-iek be ginning to draw attention, the com pany basketball games in full swing, and the varsity basketball season in its midst, an opening is furnished for every man in the entire student body to try out for some team if he is at all athletically inclined. Everything that is being done is with the idea of developing winning teams at Clem son.
