ONE 81 UNITED STATES LEADS IN POTATO CROPS Enough potatoes are grown in the United States each year to make a daily meal of two eight-ounce pota toes for every man, woman and child in the country, according to the latest available figures. In other words, over three huadred million bushels of potatoqs are raised annually in this country. The six leading states in order of importance to the potato crop are Wisconsin, New York, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Maine. In 1918 they produced almost half of the. bushels raised. I. Were it not for the modern methods1 whic hare now used in potato produc tion, it would be impossible to grow such an enormous crop. With mod6rn methods, however, potatoes make a good crop for the general farmer; and in specialized sections, the potato is a highly profitable crop. Unless the most modern and scien tific methods are used, there is an enormous overhead expense in potato production. The largest expense, how ever, comes from two main, items first t,he preparation of the land, and second, the attention, given to the growing crop such as spraying and cultivating. Careful estimates coni piled by the State Experimental Sta-' tions of New York and Minnesota show that it costs very little more to produce a large crop per acre than a ismall crop. Select Seed With Care. To get the largest quantity of pota I toes per acre, care must be exercised in selecting and planting the very best seed obtainable. Potato seed should coiform to a ype; the specifications for this type, no matter what size are regularity of shape, shallow eyes, skin of smooth teoxture, clear colored flesh and fine texture of flesh. One of the surest ways of selecting such a spe cialized and uniform type is by buying pure seed from reliable growers only. . This is not always practical though. and if the acreage is large the grower 3 should select his own seed from the I most uniform and best producing hills. Better results and yields will pay for this additional trouble. Potatoes are grown under such a variety of soil conditions that no one soil type could be called the best. As a general raic, early potatoes should he planted er comparitivelv li-Tht, H sandy loam, while L jA)Ltiep UL give bigger yields when planted in heavy loam. Heavy clays are not adapted to potatoes. It has been found a g;, practice to have potatoes follow a clover crop which has been plowed u-, in the fall. The seed bed should be worked mellow with continual disking and plowinU. Potato tubers can not push through the soil if it is hard. The potato seed should be cut from six to nine-ounce tubers, regularly formed. The pieces should weigh from one to tw~o ounces with at least one good h ealthy eye; three eyes would be bet ter. Tw. lye to fifteen bushels an acre should be planted, dlepending upon the fertility of the soil. Rows in rich soil should be thirty-twvo to thirty-six inches ap~art and the seed planted eight to fifteen inches apart. The width of the rows and the dlis taince of the seed must be gauged accordiing to the soil and the variety of the potato. Cultivation shouid begln when the potatoes are breaking through L crutst. The fir~sa cultivation should be Sdeep and subsequent cultivations shallower as the season progresses. -Cultivation should be kept up until the covering of vines renders it im-~ possible or impracticable. Late pota toes should be harvested before frost; early potatoes as soon as they are ripe In no part of potato prodluction dloe modlera farm machinery play a greatei -part than at dligging time. If five acres or more of potatoes are grown, a po tato digger will pa~y for itself in omi -season. A good potato digger shouk not run too fast. A (digger that rum too fast will invariably injure thi potatoes as it passes over the grates while it may not be absolutely neces sariy to have modern potato machiner' in potato production ,the best result: aind lowest cost are alwvays secure< if machines such as planters, sprayer: and diggers are used. Store at Onice When Dug. Wheni the potatoes are du1g, the: should not lie in the open sun, bu should be storedI in a pota to wvare house just as quickly as possibl( Iithei barrels or sacks may he usel T he temperature of the potato wvare house is very important. If it reache over forty degrees, there is dlanger o th( tubers becoming dlamp and dlecay ing. The ideal warehouse is one 1 which the temperature never goe below 34 degrees and is uniform. I it goes below 314 degrees, the potat miay get soft and watery. F Kill That Cold With CASCARA UININE' FOR AND Colds, Coughs La Grippe Neglected Colds pre Dangerous Take no chances.
