COPELA A irarriage of great inte'rest took place in Washington, D. C., iast week, both of the contra.i-1.c parties being fiom Summe-ton '.Lcii Miss Emnala Capers became the bride of Major Capers James. The bride is the young est daughter of the late Ellison Cap ers, former postmaster here and is known throughout the social circle of the State. For the past few years she has been teaching in the public schools and this year completed a suc cessful term in the Summerton Grad ed School. Mr. James is a graduate of the Citadel, of baseball fame hav ing successfully completed his course there he was sent by the war depart ment to foreign waters for the balance of his army training. Having served his time in foreign waters he recent ly returned from San Domingo and was transferred to the State. He has recently been granted a' furlough which he very pleasantly spent at Summerton with his parents, Capt. Capt. and Mrs. J. A. James. Since Mr. Jancs entered the military life he has acquired considerable promo tion, having graduated at the Citadel a Lieutenant and noiv a Major in the Marine Corps. While Mr. James at tended the Citadel he won much fame as an athlete being a prominent mem ber of the baseball squad also foot ball team. The many friends of Major and Mrs. James in Summerton wish for them a long and prosperous life together. The following was taken from the State: A pretty home wedding took place here last night at the home of Col. and Mrs. John Cr., Capers, the parties being their niece, Miss Emntala Fran ces Capers of Summerton, and Maj. Capers James, also of Summerton, now on duty here as a major in the marine corps. Miss Capers is a grandaughter of the late Bishop Elli son Capers and was a daughter of Ellison Capers of Summerton, who died last December. Major James is a graduate of the Citadel and has been in the marine corps for the past five years. He is a son of Captain and Mrs. James of Summerton. The young peoplo had not expected to he married until next October, but official orders changing Major James' detail brougl-t about the earlier mar riage at the home of her uncle, where Miss Capers has been visiting. Major James' best man was his former Classmate and fellow officer in the marine corns, Major Moore, of Co lurnbia, son of Adjutant Gaen. Moore. Lieut. Ellison Capers, now in duty in Washington, represented his mother and gave the bride away. Misses Charlotte and Frances Cap ers acted as maids of honor and oth ers in attendance represented only the relatives of Major and Mrs. Capers an'l the parties. The Rev. C. Herbert Reese, who was in the diocese of West Texas, presid erd over by Bishop William T. Capers wpen the war commenced and who ser'ved as a chaplain mo France, per formed the ceremony. Many telegrams from friends and relatives and the loving congratula tions of those present bade godispeed a"-'I h-ipy days to the young couple when they departed for a brief honey moon before the major assumes his new dluties. Mr. JIames, we tunder-stand,. will carry at. all times a full l ine oif parts and specialties for autos and will be glad I feel sure to ser've the goodi people of Summer'ton wvhen in need of repairs. Tobacco season' is in switng nowv and business is on the increase, only slight ly however due to the (depressed mar ket for' same. The farmers aroundl Sioumer'ton; seem to think that the tobaec'o prices are very low and we agree with them. We do0 not knowv whether it is the fault of the tobacco buyers, tobaero dealers or whether it is a low gr'ade of tobacco on the mar ket. We feel sure though that the prices which are b~eing patid at the present are not very- encouraging to those that planted the weed andl if the prices continue to be low it will not warrant the substicuting of tobac co for otton In this stnte when Mr. ND, Correspo Weevil arrives which from recent re ports seems to be shortly. Howeve: nowadays when a farmer discover: any kind of strange looking insect or his cotton he most assuredly believe it to be the boll weevil. The heavy rains up State has caus ed the Santee to leave the channel and for the past few day:, most of the swamp roads are impassible, the water acquiring a depth of some five or six feet in some ulaces. Our goot fisherman friend, Mr. Geo. Lesesn is reported catching the Carl) witi his pitch fork by the --agoa load in the public road several miles fron the rive:. We heard this however and do not want any one to repeat it as i. may be a fish story and little boy: mr'st not tcl fish stories. Several folks of Sum merton attend ed the revival meeting in Mannin;g on Sunday. .They report the preaching and singing of Bro. Andrews and Mr Curry very good indeed. Mr. II. I. Medlin, Manager of th Manning Oil Mill Ginery here is over hauling the plant preparatory to giv ing service to their many patrons of the past few years. Since Mr. Med hn assuned the duties as manager of the local branch. the ginnery has by a mighty fine business and Medlin states that he will have every thini m i readliness wvhen th.- first bale i~ brought to Summerton. Last week we started that work had commencd on the ne( platforn whi ch was an error. I should have stated a portion of the 01(1 platforn has been removed and the foundatior cleared preparatory for the building of a new one but so far no lumber has been provided for and we see no sign of a platform. Last year' the o11ld lat. form was inadequate to accomodat the cotton business here and many times the cotton was put on th ground to absorb the dampness of th wmiter wveather and cause it to he sol as damaged cotton, not mentioning the extra labor and cost the merchants were put to in loading the cotton. remember quite well that one firm in Summerton had a lot of 205 bales an 203 of them on the ground and cos that particular merchant the sum o about $60.00 or around thirty cent: per bale to load in cars which the railroad company will not do in th event it is put on the ground. This condition will exist the coming seaso: i. some stens are not taken to pro vidle a platform nnd one suflecienth large enough to accommodate thi business this fall. The matter should be attended to at once as to delay wil mean no platform. If the cotton buy ers will contribute or fo rm a stoel (Continued from page Four) The Manal T1 DEPA has recently r etulrnedl fi went to complete his pu: Sscarce and hard to get. ket and took{ (every avail 1i fully picked g~ood select: of the most complete sto 'j shown.
