Modern Plays .Must Be Costly. "I have here an idea for a play," said the moving picture author to the prodneer. "In the Art reel an oil tank blows up, in the second an entire rail toad train falls into a gorge, in the third a huge steamer sinks at sea, in the fourth a volcanic eruption destroys a city and in the fifth we have a battle scene calling for 10,000 supernumer aries." "Entirely too small for me to tool with." said the producer, doing Dome rapid figuring with a pencil. "That play wouldn't cost more than $5,000,000 to stage and I'm not consid ering anything that involves an ex penditure of less than $20,000,000. M~r seg Za a Ytiend, Dinksan's Drug Store: - REQUIRE REST FROM LABOR Men Make Mistake When They Keep Their "Noses Too Close to the Grindstone." "Keeping one's nose close to the grindstone" is a popular phrase which describes what a great many people think is the most efficient way of ac complishing any given task. Accord. ing to this idea, the most work can be done in the quickest time by keeping eyerlastingly at it with just as fel interruptions as possible. Sce!cnce now believes that it's all a mistake to keep one's nose too close to the grindstone. Careful studies made in a large number of manufactur ing establishments led to the conclu sion that the most work is done with the least risk of accident only when a man gives his mind and body frequent opportunities for rest. Records kept in English factorles where men are engaged in soldering tins show the amount of work done during each hour of the day to be at follows: In' the morning-first hour, 114 tins; second hour, 167; third hour, 159; fourth hour, 157; fifth hour, 138. In the afternoon-first hour, 119; second hour, 145; third hour, 163; fourth hour, 155. These tables agree with those of other factories in giving a higher out put for the second hour than for the trst, this being due to the facility which comes with practice. But the chief point which they drive home, when studied in connection with the number of accidents is that after the second hour of continuous effort, both morning ahd afternoon, there ti a continuous and marked decrease in the outpnt and a corresponding in crease in the frequency of accidents The factory owner who wants to gel the most out of his employees wil break up their work day by frequent periods of rest. In this investigation It was inipos ible to record the cumulative effects of fatigue from day to day, and from week to week, but there was evidence that the physiological products of fa tigue cannot be got rid of in a working day. This means a growing predispo sition to disease and to the form of mental excitement which results In ocial unrest. From Bad to Worse. Henry Guy Carleton, wit, journalist and playwright, stuttered and was not sensitive about It. When the Fifth avenue theater burned Mr. Carleton appeared in a newspaper office where he was then employed. The usual Saturday night confusion was greatly increased by the Bre. The office was bedlam. Ballard Smith, managing editor of the paper, was bellowing his orders with all his wonderful vigor in the effort to get to press on time. "M-m-mister Smith," began Mr. Carleton. "I've a g-g-great s-s-story about the F-fifth Avenue theater f-f-fire." "Great heavens, nan!" roared Smith. "Don't stop to talk to me about it. Don't you knoy this is Sat urday night, and we go to press In fif teen minutes? Get to work and write it, and write as fast as you know how. I want copy, not conversation. Don't you know avery minute Is precious?" "Y-.y-yes, sIr," said the other, with an insistent effort to hold the editor's attention, "but I w-w-want to k-k-knoew if you w-w-would lend me your s.tenographer."-Everybody's Mag azie. Not Much as Boys. When parents get discouraged over the lack of study and the frequent ec entricities that their boys manifest, or even over their physictl misfor tunes or poverty, they ought to find hope and consolation in the thought that Isaac Watts was constantly scolded for his absolute indifference to books- and boys' sports; Charles Dar win showed such an eccentric tend ency to absent-mindedness that on oe of his lonely tramps he walked off an embankment and nearly lost his life; Rtalph Waldo Emerson was a hopeless dreamer; the great Demos tenes was a fearful stammerer; Abra ham Lincoln, Ellhu Burrltt, Charles Dickens and Andrew Carnegie were the poorest of poor children; Anthony Trollope, the writer, was hopelessly shy and the butt of his school; Audu bon of bird fame was put down by all his elders as a fool; Caesar and Na poleon were epileptics; Oliver Gold smith was a hopeless sloven, and Thoreau was adjudged by everyone to be a crank. The queer boy does not always grow to be a man of no worth.-Selected. Dostoevski's Answer. In the doctrine that each Is respon sible for all, that suffering Is a puri tying discipline, anid may be vicari ous as well as personal, and that through such a discipline man may find God, Is the answer of Dostoev ski, the Russian novelist, to the rid de of the ages. The words he put into the lips of Father Zossima may be taken as sum ming up his message to mankind: "Brothers. flave no fear of men's in. Love a man even in his sin, for that Is the semblance of divine love, and Is the highest love on earth. "Loving humility Is marv'elously strong, the strongest of all things, and there Is nothing else like It." To Break in New Pipes.
