Gargoyles are quaintly formed heads. faces or figures used in ancient times for decorative purposes and chiefly ap plied as the terminals of waterspouts upon roofs or gables. The rain stream was arranged to flew through the mouth, and tne word gargoyle itself Is an attempt to imitate the "gurgling" sound made by the water in passing through the throat of the grotesque monster. Gargoyles were the caricatures of mediaeval times. Many were carved by monkish masons, who took the op portunity of handing on to posterity the distorted lineaments of their fel lows or even of their superiors, recog nizable as likenesses from some promi nent characteristic. The famous gargoyles of Notre Dame in Pais are supposed to have had some such origin, while others of supposedly the same origin are to be seen in churches throughout Brittany and Nor mandy as~well as here and there in England.-London Telegraph. A west side man heard a joke, new to him, the other day, and the first thing he did upon reaching home for dinner was to tell it to his wife. "Mary," he said, "heres a new joke that's mighty good. One man says, 'The theater caught fire last night' 'Did they save anything?' the second man asks. 'Yes,' says the first, 'they carried out the programme.' Isn't that a good one?" His wife said it was, and next day she tried it on her grocer. "Mr. Blank," she said, "here's a new joke.for you. One man says, 'The tne ater caught fire last night.' Another asks, 'Did they save anything?' 'Yes,' replies the first, 'they went on with the programme and finished it' Isn't that a fine joke?" The grocer said it was excellent, but confidentially he ac knowledges that he hasn't yet seen the point.-Kansas City Times. A Night Attack. As communities are generally interested in Andrew Carnegie and his gifts, the following from a Globe interview will be of in terest and value: "in my assistance to colleges," said Mr. Carnegie, when pressed for a more detailed statement of his position, "I am endeavoring to apply the same business principles which have enabled me to put myself in a position to do what I am doing. I have no intention of encouraging small colleges, nor large ones for that matter, to expend be yond their visible resources. It would do them more harm than good in most instances to piace at their disposal considerable sums of money to be employed in any way which might gratify the immediate views of their - trustees and faculty. I must be assured in the first instance that there exists a ores sing need which cannot be met by the resources at the command of the trustees. I must then be assured that the enterprise is one which has a reason for be ing, which is managed wisely and conservatively, and which has a reasonable chance of be coming self-sustaining. The method of precedure is as fol lows: The president or a represen tative of a college makes appli cation to me for tinancial aid. Such applicants receive a blank form of application. I require the facts to assure me that a gift would be wisely bestowed and well employed. The questions asked in each blank are as follows: The name of the colleges, its location, date foundation, if denominational the sect that supports and con trols it, and if not, the nature of its support the cost and value of college: grounds, buildings, and educational plant: the amount of general endowment, the annual running expenses, and from what sources this amount is derived, what library facilities the college has, what provision exists for maintaining them, how much money has beet spent for that purpose annually during the past four years. and in case the college has no library building of its own, if there are any permanent and secured sources of income to secure its maintainence and what amount can be guaranteed for that pur -pose by the college trustees in case a library building should be provided. In addition to these questions there are others calling for par ticulars in regard to the town library or other library in the vicinity of the college, for the number of stuidents -attending on December 1st during each of the last five years, whether the col lege has a preparatory depart ment, how many students are doing regular college work as distinguished from those who are taking preparatory or spec ial -cources, and calling for in formation in regard to the gen eral scope of the iustitution., "I am as ready to assist in the establishment of libraries now as ever, but the demand for them is less active than formerly. Most of the cities and large towns are already supplied, and the applications now received ar oty from small communi ties, whose requirements are not very -large. The applications now average only about one a day, and this costs mneonly about $20.000 a day. I do not consider that enough to spend in the work I have planned: hence my inter est in colleges." Asked is sectarian foundations were eligible to his gifts, he re plied: "No, not as. sectarian foundations. As a matter of fact, however, most of the colleges which started as sectarian foun dations have broadened their basis voluntarily, and while still sectarian in name, perhaps, ad mit students of all creeds- and impose no hard-and-fast condi. tions. I do not object to a school conducted under the patronage of a denomination if it prospers byvreasoti of such patronage. In thecase of a school 'so strictly guarded that it made the ac ceptance of its tenets a condition of matriculation, I am free to say that it would not interest me." Don't Borrow Trouble.
