Compulsory Eucation. Edior The Mannin-- Times: A little space in your paper for a few thoughts on compulsory education. I was disappointed when the bill was killed after being so forcibly presented by Senator Raysor of Orangebutrg, but I must say I think there should be some other legislation coupled with a com pulsory education law. The public schools in some of the country districts are almost a failure. The trustees employ the teachers and give them some little instructions at the opening of the schools and never bother with it again during the term: some of the children attend a few days and others a few weeks. If a teacher whips a child it quits school, the teacher becomes discouraged and only a few get the benefit of the public funds. There are twenty-five school districts in Clarendon:- each one bas a special tax-some two. others four mills. I think we should have a compulsory law or repeal the act allowing a vote for a special tax. as not over 50 per cent. of the. children get the benetit.: A compulsory education law should re quire the trustees to make monthly vis its to the schools to see if the teachers are doing their duty, and also see that the children attend school. Hold a meeting at some central point on the day the school closes and look over the! reports of teachers, let the trustees be subiect to removal for non-performance of duty. The county superintendent gets a sal ary. but not too much as some think. The trustees get nothing but abuse. and they should be paid something to encourage them to look after this im portant work. I think this matter of compulsory education should be agitated, as our future must depend on education. A Tried and True Friend.
