Publishes All County and Town Of ficial Advertisements. MANNING, S. C., MARCH 11, 1903. If St. Paul don't have an oil mill it will most. Dr. T. J. Davis of Jordan has moved to Summerton. . The merchants are fixing up for their spring openings. The colored Methodist church has put in electric lights. The slot machine has become a pop ular institution in town. Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Harvin of Ram sey spent yesterday in town. The oil mill project, for Greeleyville we are told is a sure thing. Miss May Wilson is in Columbia on a visit to Mrs. N. G. Gonzales. W. P. Hawkins & Co., received a very pretty lot of mules last Friday. Miss Nellie Stephens has just return ed from an extended trip in Florida. We regret to learn that Dr. W. D. Murray of Pinewood is ill with typhoid fever. Miss Olivia Ingram who is staying in Sumter, spent last Sunday night in Manning with her parents. Don't fail to read the business locals in every issue of THE TIMES. It may be the imeans of saving you many dol lars. Manning would be a good opening !or a brick factory. We believe there is good material near by for the mak ing of brick. Everybody go out next Monday night to the' Institute hall and hear Mr. Daniels lecture on the Southern Mule. It is said to be a very fine lecture. If it's a bilious attack, take Chamber lain's Stomach and Liver Tablets and a quick recovery is certain. For sale by The R. B. Loryea Drug Store, Isaac M. Loryea, Prop. The colored Baptist church of this town have recently put up a bell weigh ing 400 pounds, C tone, and inscribed upon it are the words "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism." The quality of post holes being ship ped from Pinewood has attracted the notice of Chief Hammett of the State constabulary force. and he will order an. analysis made to ascertain if it is chemically pure. Every tobacco grower should read the business local of Mr. James R. Brown, who will have a patent tobacco curing rack on exhibition in Manning on Tuesday, March 17. He desires to sell the county right. Mr. W. T. Sellers, representing the Sprunts, returns to his home this eve ning after a very satisfactory season of cotton buying here. Mr. Sellers made many friends and we hope he will be with us again next season. The board of equalization met in the court house yesterday and they will meet again Tuesday 24th inst., for the purpose of confirming assessments. Those whose assessments have been raised will be given a hearing on that day. Died at the home of her son Capt. John A. Kelley in Kingstree Feb. 26th, Mrs. Anna J. 'Godbold. The deceased in early life married Mr. Joseph J. Kelley of this county, and after his death, she married General Ellis God bold of Marioni. The new board of county commission ers had their first meeting last Satur day; mostly routine business was trans acted. The board confirmed the action of the old board with reference to the election of the clerk and the contract for the county printing. Rev. J. W. Daniel of Charleston will give a humorous lecture in the Insti tute hail next Monday night for the benefit of the ladies aid society of the Methodist church. Subject. The Southern Mule. Tickets 25 and 35 cents on sale at the store of Mr. W. C. Chan dler. Governor Heyward has granted .a pardon to Charlie Bradham convicted in the Clarendon court of adultrv. Brad ham served his sentence, and, the par don was granted to restore his citizen ship which gives him the right to vote and pay a poll tax, a privilege he could not haye until his disabilities were re moved. The case from Georgetown against John Brownfield convicted of murder ing Deputy Scurry, which was argued before the United States supreme court by Solictor John S. Wilson, was de cided in favor of the State last Mon day. The decision sustains our own courts on the ground there was no proof of the allegation of discrimination in drawing the jury. At the Nexsen place yesterday there was quite a crowd gathered to witness the big sale of cotton; buyers from sev etal places were present and on account of the condition of the cotton the buy ers were doubtful as to its value, un less they were guaranteedr this meant that the weights would be based on the weights after the damaged parts were picked off, but those in charge of the sale would not consen'. and the repre sentative of the estate bid it in, and afterwards sold to Levi Brothers, Sum ter for 9 cents round. The town authorities will have t( resort to drastic measures if the owners of dogs do not keep their pets fromr running at large; within the past few days the little son of Mr. Walker the baker, was bitten severely on the chit by a dog belonging to James DeLaine, and last evening a young man while passing through the town was attackec and painfully bitten by a dog belong ing to Mr. F. N. Wilson, the lattsr dog is quite a favorite about towvn, and everybody would hate to see hinm come to harm, "but he must not be allowed tc run on the streets. We think the council ought to put a muzzle ordinance in force--even if it is the muzzle of a policeman's pistol. We have been asked to give our opinion as to the propriety of young women accepting employmhent in the American Cigar Company's factory in Charleston, as there are a number who, attracted by an advertisement it these columns are thinking if it is ai proper place, to grive the work a trial. While in the city recently we made some inquiries, and our information is, that a young lady can with all proprie ty accept employment in the factory as the management is very careful t< keep out people of questionable char acters. At first a girl cannot make anl more than her expenses, but in a fey weeks she can make fairly good wages We are informed that a nnmber of mm isters, as wvell as business men are aid ing the management in securing re spectable help. B Torvea Drug Store. We had a very pleasing conversatior yesterday with Mr. Muldrow Burges who recently returned to his home it Sandy Grove township from abroad Mr. Burgess is a son of Mr. R. E. Bur gess and being of an adventurous spirit, a few years ago, enlisted in the cav alry branch of the army went to thE Philippines, and while there received his discharge and became a member of the Manila police force. He took part in the Chinese trouble. stayed in China about a year, went to Japan and circu lated around the world generally. He talks of the countries he visited very interestingly, and exhibits a very in telligent ideai of things generally. His travels have been an education to him, and the thirst for more travel has not been fully quenched. In a few days he will go to St. Louis where he expects to obtain a position with the exposition managers. What's in a Name? Everything is in the name when it comes to Witch Hazel Salve. E. C. DeWitt & C. of Chicago discovered, some years ago, how to make a salve from Witch Hazel that is a specific for Piles. For blind, bleeding, itching and protruding piles, eczema, cuts, burns, bruises and all skin diseases, De Witt's has no equal. This has given rise to numerous worthless counter feits. Ask for DeWitt's-the genuine. The R. B. Loryea Drug Store. Summerton News. Special to The M.fannin:, Times. I have been looking every week for something from your correspondents from other places. but have not seen anything except from Paxville. What's the matter, have they all gone to sleep? I find the more I write the better I can write. No dispensaries were open on Tues day, 3d inst., and the town election passed off quietly. Mr. T. S. Rogan was elected intendant without opposi tion. Messrs. R. B. Smyth, J. M. Can tey, Ashley Avant and H. L. Brunson were chosen wardens. They are all young business men and it is hoped that they will pull together and enforce the laws, which is much needed for a town that is growing like this little town is. It is thought that Mr. H. R. Meldow will be reappointed clerk and treas urer bv the new counsel. A visitor arrived at Mr. T.. S. Ro gan's one day last week. It's a boun eing baby girl. Dr. Tom Davis of Jordan moved here last week and will occupy the Dr. Briggs home. Mrs. J. H. Rigby of Manning visited relatives here'the past week. Mr. F. C. Hinson and family who moved from this place to Alcolu in Jan uary, moved back last week. Mr. Ashley Avant, who has been con fined to his bed, is able to be out. It is hoped that the proper authori ties will see to it that the street and property tax law is enforced, as no town can have streets. side- walks. bridges or anything without money. It would not be a surprise if the Avant Mercantile Company loses one or both of the charming ycung ladies in their dry goods department, as there are some young men here that would, if they could, induce these girls to give up their places, and if they keep on may succeed. It is said that the $15,000 to establish a bank at this place has been nearly all subscribeg by the citizens of this town. H. Sumnmerton, S. C., March 8, 1903. Fearful OddisAgainst Him. Bedridden, alone and destitute. Such, in brief, was the condition of an old sol~ dier by the name of J. J. Havens, Ver sailles, O. For years he was troubled with kidney disease and neither doctors nor medicines gave him relief. Al length he tried Electric Bitters. It put him on his feet in short order and now he testifies, "I'm on the road to complete recovery." Best on earth for liver and kidney troubles and all forms of stomach and bowel complaints. The one who has to stop his horse to a walk because the road has been plowed into, he thinks. He has found out, too, that it is a crime to thus butcher up the road. Why not have all the roads properly laid off and the plowmen warned. Did it ever occur to you, how long a road overseer and the public generally, with the supervisor thrown in, (who, though, knows nothing about the roads in this community) will allow a log to lie across a public road. It may remain there for months partly or entirely across~ the highway of traffic and travel and mail. Then, there is the bridge business. How many times have you, Mr. Saiper visor, seen a bridge over a deep ditch get in a dangerous condition, (and any bridge is dangerous with the cover slipping or slipped, or decaying or de caed; and there was no one to look after it. At least no on~e does look after it. The next time you travel over the highway, gentle reader, you observe the low places in the highway. In these low places you will find, without searching for it, mud and water, while both sides or edges of this low-way (intended for high-way) are high anc dry. It is easy to see that if these high edges were thrown into the high-way it would be a dry-way while the edges would received the water. I am not making a plea for the chain gang. I know that the road working of this county is not laid, Lazarus-like at the door of the chaingang. I believe we ought to have some work from Pax ville to Manning by the "gang," but we need to have those who are subject to road duty do their duty on the roads. PAXVILLE. Well Again. The many friends of John Blount will be pleased to learn that he has en tirely recovered from his attack of rheumatism. Chamberlain's Pain Baln cured him after the best doctors in the town (Monon, Ind.,) had failed to giv4 relief. The prompt relief from pail which this liniment affords is alonE worth many times its cost. For sale by The R. B. ~Loryea Drug Store, Isaac M Loryea. Prop. Pension Notice. One of the most remarkable cases of a cold, deep-seated on the lungs, caus ing pneumonia, is that of Mrs. Gertrude E. Fenner. Marion, Ind.. who was en tirely cured by the use of One Minute Cough Cure. She says: "The cough ing and straining so weakened me that I run down in weight from 148 to 92 pounds. I tried a number of remedies to no avail until I used One Minute Cough Cure. Four bottles of this won derful remedy cured me entirely of the cough, strengthened my lungs and re stored me to my normal weight, health and strength.." The R. B. Loryea Drug Store.
