Loryea Drug Store. As an example of genuine improve ment the modern stables of W. P. Haw kins & Co. is the superior of any saies stable in South Carolina that we have any knowledge of. It is worth every farmer's while to visit it, whether he wants to buy a buggy, -wagon, harness, saddle, horse, mule, or not, he will get ideas at that stable which he can carry home with him to put in vogue in his own at little-cost. Mr. Hawkins showed us through yesterday, and -on entering we saw a beautiful display of harness in glass cases, farther back, were as handsome pleasure -fehicles as can be found anywhere, in the next room was wagons of the very best manufacture and models of strength, and between the two is a conveniently arranged office with Captain D. J. Bradham in charge of the books. But the most at tractive feature of this mammoth es tablishment is the home for the live stock. Large, airy and clean, great essentials for the preservation of the health of stock: stables are kept per fectly clean and the whole appearance of things is inviting. All through the stables are fountains of artesian water, and in the mule department every con venience is there to display stock, and those who go there to look are not an noyed with the bad odors usual in sta bles. We ask our friends to visit this establishment and inspect it, and know ing Mr. Hawkins well, we can give our personal assurance' that he will be found thoroughly reliable and that he will endeavor to transact his business to make friends. When you come to town be sure and visit the sales and livery stables of W. P. Hawkins & Co. When you see it in our advertisement it is so. Toilet Soap 3 cakes for 10 cents the best value for the money ever offered in Manning. The R. B. Loryea Drug Store. The annual millinery . "openings" took place in this town last Wednesday and Thursday, and as usual the display of millinery was of the season's most at tractive specialties. On Wednesday the weather was inclement, and the early part of the day the ladies did not turnout in great numbers, but with the sunshine in the afternoon came the ladies in full force. At .Jenkinson's a nice lunch was spread and there was music to add to the tastily decorations; Miss Coppedge's department was a thing of beauty and the styles were a joy to. the woman. The dress goods depart ment had as nice. display of dress goods and trimmings as could' be found any where and Jenkinson seemed to be in his glory while showing off the latest styles in this line. At Till's, thei millinery was' a bower of flowers, ribbons, laces and feathers, Parisian model hats were the delight of the ladies and Mrs. Bass has every rea son to feel proud of her success in get ting up a handsome show for her first opening., Till's millinery department shows great improvement and his ex hibition of fashior ably trimmed hats will prove a holy teriror to the hus bands and daddies. Hirschmann had an opening too, which was very faiorably commented on. Those who saw the exquisitely trimmed hats, the handiwork of Mrs. Hirschmann and Miss Paget came away delighted. Thiese ladies are ex pert milliners and the display they made was very pret~ty and attractive. Courtesy extende d to all our patrons whether from the mansion or the cabin. GENTLEMEN: An aged, demented woman calling herself Sallie Ghant has been wandering through this section barefoot and begging food and shelter. From her conversation I gather that she must be from Lancaster county of this State, or Union county, North Carolina. Haye written parties in both counties, but have had no response. For more than a week she has been oc cupying a cabin on the parsonage premises and receiving food from my table. The instincts of common hu manity forbid such a person turned adrift. If you cannot find warrant for caring properly for the case, kindly in form me what course to pursue. I have mentioned the case to the Judge Qf Probate and he is unable to act because she is not "violently" in sane as the law demands. c Believing that your honorable body can devise some form of expediency to meet the case if n6t by legal -statute, then by the law of brotherly kindness, I remain, Yours very respectfully, W. A. BETTS. The above fetter reached the County Commissioners Saturday afternooi af ter they had adjourned, and it was on lv by accident that Mr. C. R. Sprott who'brought the letter, happened to meet up with Messrs Turbeville and Fischer two of the board, on the street as they were about to leave for their homes. Mr. Sprott after 'handing the above letter to Mr. Turbeville, explain the .situation, and although the board had adjourned, Messrs. Turbeville and Fischer realized that this was one of those emergencies which appealed to their judgment. The law does not provide for such cases; they have no almhouse and no funds for such pur pses, but the commissioners very pro perly authorized Mr. Sprott to say to Rev. W. A. Betts, whose benevolence in caring for this afflicted creature, is appreciated, that he could arrange with some, one to watch and care for her, until her people can be heard from, and to charge the bill to the county; they would a pprove an account not exceeding ten dollars. Kingstree, Williamsburg County, October,4.-Special: A tragedy occur ed near here last Wednesday night, resulting in the drowning of T. B. Mis, a young white man, living a few miles beyond Black River, on the Man ning r-oad. On the night stated Mr. Mims started home from town about 9 o'clock, travelling in a road cart. It is said that he was considerably the worse for liquor. Instead of following the road home the horse strayed off into the darkness on a path leading to the river and ar riving at the bank, plunged into the water, about three feet below, carrying with him the vehicle and its occupant. Two days passed before the unfortu nate man's fate was discovered, and it was only to-day that the horse was traced to the river bank a few hundred feet down the stream. The body of the horse was seen in the water and brought ashore, still hitched to the cart. Tahe river was then dragged for the body of the missing man, but nothing has been found up to this time except his hat. Mr. Mims was 30 years old and leaves a wife and one child. His sad fate is universally deplored.-C. W. W. in News and Courier. Don't Let Them Suffer.
