Mhe anning Mimes. L4OUIS APPELT, Editor MANNING, S. C., OCT. 9. 1901. PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY A PLAY FOR APPLAUSE. The unexpected is what usu ally happens, but in this instanc< the expected has happened, ani that too, in the shape of a wel laid plan for stage playing Col. Wilie Jones, a most agree able gentleman announced some time ago his intention to becom a candidate for the United State4 Senate. His financial interest were as great then as they ar now, but all at once he has dis covered that his business inter ests need his attention at home After Col. Jones had announcec his candidacy for the Senate there happened an incident a Gaffney which caused Senatoi Tillman and McLaurin, both, t< tender their resignations to Gov ernor McSweeney. - C oIon e Jones is chairman of the Stat executive committee, and a warn personal friend of Senator Till man-a friendship which may-b4 the result of "kissing the rod tha smites." In the convention u. 1896, Colonel Jones had been se lected by his congressional dis trict as a delegate to the Nation al Convention, and Tillman wa so -distrustful of him that hE publicly, in open convention made a speech which influence( the. convention to defeat Jones and at Tillman's dictation, Jone was-disgracefully repudiated, ani treated as if he was a discoveret spy in the act of sneaking int< the delegation. Jones, however has not allowed this little inci dent to bear him malice, but oi the contrary he became such , warm friend, that when Senato Tillman threw down his com mission at Gaffney, he talkei with him, and then sought Gov ernor McSweeney and urged hin to return the resignation. Jone at that time imagined that h( was baking in the sunshine o: of Tillmars favor. The governor did return the re signations as Col. Jones pleaded whether lis-telling the Governo: that he had just seen Tillmai who regretted the incident ver much, "the whole thing wa: done in passion" etc, had any in fluence on the governor's actio2 we capnot say, neither can w< say, that Colonel Jones' solici tude'for Tfillman influenced th goveriior, but we can say tha Jones urged the governor to re turn - the resignations, afte: which, Tillman was his, gues when the executive . committe< was last called together, an( after.Tiflman made a speech or dering the committee to denounct McLa'urin and demand hij resig nationi Colonel Wilie Jones vote< for such a resolution. His friend ship for Tillman made him obe dient to his will to such an ex tent, that he did not realize th< silly,' awkward and inconsistan position he was placing himsel: in, to be chairman of the party a candidate for the office, urging theagovernor to return the resig nations, and then at the comn mand of his friend to vote t< demand an opponents resigna tion. - In the Sunday dailies it was an nounced that one of the Sena torial candidates would spring*; sensation' the next day whic] would astound the natives, and it Monday's issue an interview wit] Colonel Jones appears, in whic] he .withdraws from the race ani proposes that the track be clear ed and give General Wade Hamp ton th~office without opposition The Colonel's withdrawal wa: not at all astounding, for .thosE who know him are aware that h4 iss not built of Senatorial tim ber. The people of South Caro lina appreciate a good man, bu goodness is only one of. th< requisites needed for that exalted position; we need in the Unite< States Senate to represent us, good man wit~h intellectual quali fications to be able to conten< with-the brain-of the Union, wi also need a man there, who is able to back up his gentle dispo sition with a#determination to d< rigrht tho'' the heavens fall. I lenient disposition to boys in thi army where no fighting is goins on, is not an essential ingredian f6i the making of a -Representa tive, -nor is an accommodating and an agreeing attitude toward: all politicians a special qualifica tion for the making of a fit Rep resentative. - Brain, backbone honor, judgment and indepen dence is what the people want and the man who has not all of these requisites, matters not hov~ good, unanimous and clever hi may make himself, he might a: well pull out of the race and savi himself the-shumiliating specta cle of being placed on the "dunce stool" by the people. Colonel Jones' proposition fo: all of the candidates to withdrav and let General Hampton b< elected' unanimously, is to on: mind as hypocritical as it is ab surd. If Jones has all at onc< discovered that Tillmen is no looking upon him with favor, bu -that Latimer or Johnstone o: Henderson have succeeded ii winning that m"a desired smile -ler that hi: atorests" wil imagine tha ss interests interests" i) Ssome of th< otners. But if Jones has had sudden awakening about hi: "home business interests," wha did the other candidates do ti him that he wants'Wade Hamp ton to have the place. Jones war willing for Hampton to b~alrop ped when he was still in the ul He was one of John L. M. Irby's best friends, and now when he finds himself so overwhelmed with his "home business inter ests" that he cannot go in the V field and contend with the brain of the State, he wants everybody to get out of the way that a man of eighty two years of age might have the position. The proposi tion is too absurd to come from a man who even, had a dream that it would be pleasant to have L an opportunity to warm a chair Iin the United States Senate, and every reader of Jones' interview will at once catch on to his stage plav. General Wade Hampton deser ves all the honor and respect that the people of South Carbli na can bestow, but to place him in a position where the infirmi ties of old age would be exposed is a cruel suggestion, one, we do not believe will even obtain the thanks of the old hero's friends. Why want General Hampton to represent South Carolina in the United States Senate at this time? It is known to every in telligent mind that our govern ment is at a stage of its existance which will require the most vigorous minds to grapple with the intricate problems to be solved; students are needed. It is also known that General Hamp ton has been out of touch with the trend of events for a num ber of years and his age and strength forbid him from becom ing the student that these impor tant issues demand. . If South Carolina wants to do something for General Hampton, let it do that which the "grand old man" can appreciate, but do L not take him for material to build up sentiment for selfish purposes. If politicians cannot win the votes of the people with something practical and busi ness like, let them' refrain from a hypocritical sentiment. Love and veneration for Hampton does not entitle a politician to public favor, any more so, than does an agreeing attitude to wards politicians. Buchannan that he -will not stand for re-election, re lieves the third judicial district problem very much. Judge Bu jchannan had friends in this . cir cuit who, would have felt much embarrassed had he continued in -the race, but now since he no longer need be considered, we should like to give an expression as regards one of the announced candidates. We .refer to Hon. Robert 0. Purdy a young, ac tive, conscientious student and worker, a character above re proach, and. an .unfiinching de termination. Mr. Purdy pos sesses fine judicial material. He -has the ambition to make his name second to none, the char acter to be studious, and his life's career has been a synonym for unswerving honesty SThe General Assembly in seecting R. 0. Purdy to be one of the circuit judges of this State. would be giving to the people a man whose conduct on the bench will be characterized with a determination to hold the scales of justice 'with an even hand. He will do his duty. We hope that when the lpgislature convenes that the members will fill this important position from the ranks of merit and not from the ranks of politicians. We have known Mr. Purdy ever since he began the practice of law and that his career was suc cessful may be judged by the large and lucrative practice he built up. In our opinion,, were Mr. Purdy to consult his financi al interests he wourd not permit the use of his- name for a judg ship, for he can make at the practice of his profession more than the salary of judge, but he has consented~to become a can didate, and we most sincerely commend him for support to the Representatives of the people of South Carolina. You know What You Are Taking When you take Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic because the formula is plainly printed 'on every bottle showing that it is simply Iron and Quinine in a tasteless form. No Cure. No pay. 50c. The exposition to be ,held in Charleston is one of the grandest opportunities the people of this State has ever had, or may have again in many years to bring to public notice the resources of every county in this,State. The idea that we have nothing to ex hibit is erroneous; every county in South Carolina has plenty of material that would make a very interesting and profitable exhibit -We have valuable- minerals, woods, soils, grasses, canes, fruits and flowers, then we have an ingenious people who have many articles of their own manufacture that will prove valuable to the exhibition, the handiwork of our ladies, their painting, sculpture, and other works of art could all be placed Sin the building provided by the State. Every farmer, mill man, mechanic or merchant can con tribute something in the shape of a product of his town or county and thus make our ex hibit an attraction for wealth In last week's issue we repro luced from the News and Courier I clipping credited to the Laur ens County News, a paper edited by a former editor of the Horry Herald. In our comments, we referred to the Laurens County News editor, as having advocat ed the electicn of Samps Pope the Republican endorsed candi date for Governor. On last Mon day evening we received a polite letter from the editor of the Laurens County News in which he explained that he took charge of the Horry Herald after the campaign in which Pope was a candidate, and that he had never supported Pope, and as we do not wish to do an injustice to this former editor of the Horry Her ald, now of the Laurens County News, we take pleasure in say ing that we were mistaken in stating that he supported Pope. His explanation convinces us that we were wrong in locating him with the Horry Herald at the time Pope was a candidate for Governor and therefore tender to him our apology. Our jury laws are in danger of becoming entangled in the mesh es of the Constitution. Judge Earnest Ga'ry at Aiken recently, declared that Aiken county is the only county in the State which has a jury law that is in accord with the Constitution. If his deci sion is sustained by the Supreme court, the courts throughout the State will be seriously hampered. Judge Gary holds that the jury Act approved in 1900 is uncon stitutional and therefore non effective. The General Assembly is mrade up largely of lawyers, and it was the meinbers of this profession who are responsible for the bun gling legislation,if it is bungling. Judge Gary is regarded one of the clearest Judges on the bench, and his decision is regarded with much seriousness. We hope the Supreme court will be able to find Judge Gary in error, if - it does not, then our courts had as well be suspended, until the General Assembly can remedy the wrong, because wherever the courts are convened, the jury law will be atack and endless trouble will result. The Act that has just been declared unconsti tutional passed through the hands of the judiciary commit tees of both the Senate and the House, these committees are made up entirely of lawyers, and they will now haves:to put their legal minds together to ,bring order out of chaos. Bom Th KindYou Hiave Always 8eoud cr6. - lew Zion Dots. Editor The Manning Tunes; I have been ruminating in my mind for a subject to write about; 'there is absolutely no news this week, and I want to keep my promise to give your readers something each week, that af - ter having written about Manning's tobacco market with its ruinous man agement, its cotton market with itsj short-sightedness and the kind estima tion in which the. people of this section held THE TmDES editor, to be frank in the absense of 'news. I hardly know a better subject than to sound a note of. warning to those contempiating mar riage. JI have often. o'bserved one thing be fore marriage-how devoted and atten tve to the'girls, is a young man he ex pects to marry. He carries his umbrel ia over her, lugs her shawl and boxes, picks up her handkerchief or gloves if, she happens to drop it, he looks after] her with tender care, takes her buggy riding, spends money for ice cream and candy, goes with her to church, whether he be heathen or' Christian. The denomination makes no difference to him, the girl is what he is after. How seldom do -you see those attentions shown after marriage. The same fel low becomes mean and niggardly, does not show his wife any attentions. makes her work like a slave, and look out for herself, cares nothing for her religion, or her churcai, and gets mad if his wife asks him for money to pay her pastor. The vilest characteristics of a man to pretend religion to win his way in the It is above metaphysics and often be yond the help of physic. MIXSC WHOLESALE ~FR UIT and ~1Manu fact uirsr SBARRELS, BASKE High Grade V( Tood graces of a girl, and then after narriage to show her religion disre ;pect, such a man played hypocrite to ,et a wife; and the man who does such a thing, pretends love for a woman, and ifter capturing the prize shows disre ;pect for her religion and her church, is no gentleman. I talk abstractly of this love. It is an affection of the eart the head cannot tell anything about it. It would run him crazy for his angel to say that was was only a friend. I want to tell you young lady that a young man in love is generally daft on the subject. He will sooner or later pop the question: if he is true, he will never flattor or lie to you. One evi dence is true in love. An open frank and intelligent confession of his love. Beware of the dramatic liar, who at tempts to fondle with you, one of these fellows that fall upon their knees to our out his agony of soul, wants to kiss you. Watch him, lest he be a snake in the grass, keep him at arm's length and never let any of them be certain of victory until after the mar riage ceremony is over. If the man appears frightened you may be certain he loves, and if he is any account he will make a good hus baind. Love is not for sale, and happi ness cannot be bought with gold; marriage is not a matter of convenien ce. It is the joining of two hearts that they may beat as one, until death should part them. I see where the old maids of Man ning are going to have a convention, I hope they will start a movement to put a hustle on some widowers and bachelors that I see around that town whose clothes are needing the gentle touch of woman to mend the places which are in need of patches.
