The genuine is a certain cure for piles, sores and skin diseases. The R. B. Loryea Drug Store, Isaac M. Loryea, Prop. We always advise our readers to give the preference of their patronage- to home enterprises, if the home enter prise will do as well as elsewhere. There are two oil mills in the county, and both deserve the patronage of our farmers providing their output, weights and prices suit. If one sells meal cheaper than the other, the one selling cheapest will get the trade. Therefore it is well to get prices from both before buying. There is no need to buy out of the county. Their promptness and their pleasant effects make DeWitt's Little Early Ris ers most popular little pills wherever they are known. They are simply per feet for liver and bowel troubles. The R. B. Loryea Drug Store,Isaac M. Lor yea, Prop. The barn and stables belonging to Mr. W. E. Daniels, about three miles north of Manning, were destroyed by fire last Saturday night and the loss was severe. The barn contained about 500 bushels of corn and other produce, be sides nearby was his forage which was also destroyed. There was no insur ance and nothing saved. Mr. Daniels is convinced that the fire was of incen diary origin because the flames were discovered on the outside at the back end of the barn near the ground. Mr. Daniels is the last man who would be suspected of having enemies, because he is very considerate of his employees and neighbors. H6 has had no un pleasantness with anybody and yet he is satisfied some one set the fire. He says the only way he can account for the fire is, that the party setting it ex pected to rob the house while his family was out at the barn. Counterfeits of DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve are liable to cause blood poison ing. Leave them alone. The original has the name DeWitt's upon the box and wrapper. It is a'harmless and healing salvye for' skin diseases. Uine qualled for piles. The R B. Loryea Drug Store, Isaac M. Loryea, Prop. The party that sent us an unsigned communication for publication will recur to our oft repeated declarations that we do not publish any communica tions unless they are accompanied with the name of the writer. Te article sent us however, is of a nature that we p refer not to publish in our columns un less authorized to publish same over the name of the writer. We are ap preciative of the nice things said about our work as a public servant, and the writers contempt expressed for ceartain methods being used for political effect, but at the same time we cannot deviate from an established rule of long stand ing. We endeavor to conduct THE TM as a newspaper should be, and can do so because THE TIM is ours, it is a business institution and not a vehicle to further the machinations of a grasping clique Robbed the Grave. A startling incident, of which Mr. John Oliver of Philadelphia was the subject, Is narrated by him as follows: "I was in a most dreadful condi tion. My skin was almost yellow, eyes sunken. tongue coated, pain continually in back and sides, no appetite-gradually growing weaker day by day. Three physicians had given me up. Fortunately. a friend advised trying Electric Bitters; and to my great joy and surprise, the first bottle made a decided Improvement. I con tinued their use for three weeks, and am now a well man. I know they saved my life, and rob bed the grave of another victim." No one should fall to try them. Only 50 cts., guar teed, at the R. B3. Loryea drug store. Death of a Faithful Nurse. There was general and sincere sor row at the Columbia hospital yesterday at noon when Miss Theodosia Wells, one of -the most popular nurses of that institution, died of typhoid fever after an illness of three weeks. She had re cently nursed a very malignant case of typhoid fever at St. Matthew's and contracted the disease there, returning to the hospital ill with it herself. Miss Wells had been attached to the hospital force for about a year and a haif, and was noted for her sweet and unselfish disposition. She was loved dearly by all the members of the hos pital corps and indeed by all whose pleasure it was to meet her and enicoy her minaistering care. She was just 23 years of age. She was a daughter of Mrs. William Wells of Sumter county, who was with her when the end came, and she was perfectly conscious up to within an hour of her death. She was a devoted member of the Baptist church in Sumter and here at tended the First Baptist church. "Competition is the life of trade" ant when the experiment of having a whole sale grocery establishment was tried b3 the Manning Grocery Co., under the management of Capt. I. I. Bagnal, il soon became apparent that this whole sale concern was ripping the life out o1 the retail grocery business. As a conse quence a combination was formed tc counter-act the loss of trade: this com bination was known as the "Farmer Supply Company" under the manage ment of Mr. Wilkins, but the people not forgetful of the money saved.them by the "Manning Grocery Company" stuck to it, and that concern is still doing business, while the Wilkins company has discontinued. Competition is a great thing and, if this place could af ford two wholesale establishments the buyers would not be losers thereby, but the discontinuence of the Wilkins concern illustrates forcibly that the people of Clarendon will stand by those who start benefits for them. Many re garded the opposition to the Manning Grocery as a scheme to cripp.e it, and force it out of business, and when that was accomplished, the people would be thrown back to the old retail profits; therefore they clung on to the Manning Grocery and would have continued to do so. even if the other concern had sold cheaper. This combination busi ness is getting to be a serious matter. A few men in a community can by com bining their money get control, and if they are so disposed, they can be very intolerant and hurtful. We believe it is safe to frown down anything like a combination by withholding patronage. When we speak of combinations in this respect, we do not mean to discourage the establishment of joint stock con cerns for the purpose of putting up a bank or a factory, mill or other indus trial enterprises, which afford labor and employment, but we mean that when men combine their money for the purpose of destroying an existing busi n.cs in order to put themselves in con trol, such institutions should be frown ed down upon. Any combination that is formed for the purpose of controlling a certain business, will at first use its individual influence to destroy those they are opposing, and once they suc ceed to crush out their object, they will then take advantage of their monoply, and the people wi4j be forced to pay back many fold, all that it cost the com bination to get that monoply. All mon oplies are dangerous when managed by corporate greed. We have never heard of a corporation securing control of any business but what they took advantage of the situation and forcel up prices, that is what they combine for. It is common for a concern of this character to start out with cut prices, and run for some time at a loss, thereby forcing the concern they wish to crushto lose also, then it is only a matter of time, money and people's backing to determine the existence of the concern not backed by the combine. If the people are led as tray by the inducments offered by the combine, the other concern goes to the wall and the combine has matters in its own clutches, and all past observation shows that when the combine becomes master it rules with an iron grasp. The people of Clarendon clinging to the Manning Grocery is a sign that they realized what would follow had they split up their patronage and with that keen foresight characteristic of intelli gence, they gave little encouragement to those who started the opposition con cern.
