Had a letter from Daddie today, also some five or six from Jessie. This is the first time I've had any mail in two weeks. Do wish I could see Otis but I fear there is no chance, we see very little of the army. I do pray and hope that we both shal1 get back some day. I do miss you all so much?you w'll never know how much I love you. when I can take you in my arms agsm I'll be so liappv. I hope to get back in March or about the middle of April, at least I'm going to put in for- a request for leave and I do hope rbey will let me come home for a little -while. On this trip out we've been looking for survivors; only found a 'large amount of wreckage and several bodies floating around. This was one of our ships that wis sunk and it seems as tho all hands are lost, r do wish I could tell you more but censor regulations, will not permit. The papers wilT" ?ive a good write ap about it. I've been on the river for nearly 13 months. I've got orders to go to the TL :S. S. Dixie. T am glad of it for I'll have lots of work to do and I want tne experience, wnai 1 dislike is that I won't get to go to sea any more, always in port. He had been one month to the day before the iffstres^in? news reached his relatives here, having d*ed the 1st of October Otis Lawton Crooks was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Crooks of the Broad River section and was in the 24th yea** of his a?e. He left Xewberry the latter part of last J"lv and went overseas as a member of Co. A 34th PfOneer infantry. He died fo' bis country, making the supreme sar rifice as a brave soldier who w?r willing to risk his life in defense of America and the nations associated with her in the great struggle for freedom.
