Haven't heard from you in a long.
long time, do write me often, for
sister dear, you don't know how your
letters help.
Prom The Herald I notice where
you and Lewis made a trip to Miss
1k>u Walpole's wedding. I know yon
"had a nice time, write and tell me
all about it.
Had a letter from Daddie today,
also some five or six from Jessie.
This is the first time I've had any
mail in two weeks.
Do wish I could see Otis but I fear
there is no chance, we see very little
of the army. I do pray and hope that
we both shal1 get back some day. I
do miss you all so much?you w'll
never know how much I love you.
when I can take you in my arms
agsm I'll be so liappv. I hope to get
back in March or about the middle
of April, at least I'm going to put in
for- a request for leave and I do hope
rbey will let me come home for a
little -while.
On this trip out we've been looking
for survivors; only found a 'large
amount of wreckage and several
bodies floating around. This
was one of our ships that wis sunk
and it seems as tho all hands are lost,
r do wish I could tell you more but
censor regulations, will not permit.

I've been on the river for nearly
13 months. I've got orders to go to
the TL :S. S. Dixie. T am glad of it
for I'll have lots of work to do and
I want tne experience, wnai 1 dislike
is that I won't get to go to sea
any more, always in port. I love to

them, its the greatest sport going.
I'm going to gain lots of flesh now,
will get plenty of sleep, certainly
will miss the bumps and jolts which
I get at sea. I went for a long way a
this afternoon and feel just fine
Think I'll take ud golf. 20 out every
Afternoon late, then I'll feel like eatdinner.
That's about all you can
do over here, play golf and tennis.

afternoon. November 1. that her
brother Ot-'c hai died of pneumonia
iv a French hospital. He had been
one month to the day before the

here, having d*ed the 1st of October
Otis Lawton Crooks was the son of
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Crooks of the
Broad River section and was in the
24th yea** of his a?e. He left Xewberry
the latter part of last J"lv and
went overseas as a member of Co. A
34th PfOneer infantry. He died fo'
bis country, making the supreme sar
rifice as a brave soldier who w?r
willing to risk his life in defense of
America and the nations associated
with her in the great struggle for
freedom. Otis was an exceptionally
