Florence, Italy, December 13.?Vincenzo Perugia, from whom Leonardo Da Vinci's masterpiece, "Mona Lisa," "vvas recovered here yesterday, declared absolutely to the police to-day that he ' had no accomplices, either direct or j indirect, in the theft of the painting from the Louvre in Paris. Nobody knew of his plan before its execution; nobody saw him when he abstracted the picture in his possession. "I did not take the painting through j a desire for gain," he said, "but wish- j ed to accomplish a good and holy j worK dy returning to usy cuuuu .y unc . of the many treasures stolen from j it." While working in the Louvre, he ! shame on hearing visitors indicate 1 the best works as Italian. One day he i took this oath: "I will be unwortnv of Italy if I do not return to her one continued he was overcome with j of these master-pieces. The idea obsesser him and the j "Mona Lisa" was ever before him. * When he could delay no longer he found he could accomplish his purpose without great difficulty, as a] ready was known by tnose employed about the building. After the theft he . was interrogated by the police, but his frankness and his request that they search his room disarmed I suspicion. . Similarly, when he crossed the tFrench frontier, he so readily opened his work box for the authorities that they neglected to search it. Apparently it contained only a few rags and liis tools. But the drug trade has found a safer, more pleasant remedy than calomel in Dodson's Liver Tone. W. G. Mayes tell us that their drug store sells Dodson'a Liver Tone in i practically every case of biliousness and liver trouble where calomel used : to be taken.
