Anderson is again to suffer for lark of electrical energy, due to the disaster to the Portman Shoals power plant of the Southern Public Utilities company late Thursday afternoon, the third time in its history, but this time not so severe as on either of the other two occasions. Today the auxiliary steam plant of the company is in full operation, having been started up Thursday night, some power is being secured from Gregg Shoals on the Savannah river, and the steam plant at the Anderson mills is running. There were five young men ft and three negroes in the plant at the f f time of the accident, and two of the former, Air. T. M. Fellers, of Newt berry, and E. W. Harper, Jr., of Lowndesville, dynamo tenders, were seriously injured. The former struck by pieces of the flying wheel, suffering a severe concussion on the head and a slight fracture of the an' * : Tin, +V.Q kle Desiaes otner injuries. v> ucu explosion came, pieces of the wheel flew into the casing of a transfc former, igniting the two barrels or more of oil, which was showered over V the building, and Mr. Harper was severely burned by this. With his v clothing saturated with the oil, and aflame, he ran from the building to a small branch nearby, where he succeeded in extinguishing the fire by rolling over and over in the water. He was burned severely on the face head and back and his hurts are most painful, but not considered danger ous. Soon after the accident physicians were called from the city and attend\ ed the young men at the home of Mr. R. L. Swittenberg, plant manager at Portman. On account of the chill of the night it was thought best that they remain there through the night, and were brought to the hospital here today for treatment. Mr. H. A. Orr, local manager, and others connected with the company, went out with the physicians, and Mr. Orr remained there with the injured men' Tburs-\ day night. mv "Kvn<ir<i' home is at Newberry. It is announced today that while the injuries of both the young: men are very painful, they are not so serious as had at first been feared, j and it is believed that both will be able to be out within a short time. AVOID RUSH OF EXPRESS. Attend to Business Promptly and Save Time and Money. These are rushing,' busy Christmas ! times and crowding season. It is well to bear in mind the following rules j in expressing packages: All packages snould be properly j packed, ana carefully and plainly maiked as to street and number. This | is important. Start a shipment right j and it will go right. A receipt is issued for every package. received and a receipt taken from consignee for same. Money or valuables should not be shipped in a freight package. The way to send money is to place it in a package to itself and ship it through the money department. Shipments by the Southern Express Co. go forward on through waybills, j in tnrougn cars; uie\ nuvtr yviovuai and individual attention, and there is a written record of same from time of receipt until delivery is effected. The company is responsible for the loss of or damage to every package entrusted to its care. The value of every shipment should be stated. Capt. W. S. Langford, the accommodating agent at this point, will have on two extra wagons to handle the business, and will also deliver on Sunday, during Christmas.
