Newberry Has .Asked .for .Special Term of Common Pleas Court Second Week February. The Newberry bar has agreed to ask for a special term of the court of common pleas to be held at New berry the second week in February. It will be recalled that at the last term of the court of common pleas for December, the lawyers agreed that they would not have any civil ,business, and the jury that was drawn for that term was notifieu not to come. Judge Shipp, ,however, was present for several days and heard equity cases and. passed a number of orders, transacting such business as could be done without the aid of a jury. The next regular term of the common pleas court for this !ounty will not be held until the first .of May and some members of the bar have a number of eases which they desire to try, so it was decided to ask for this special term for February. There are very few cases for. trial, except several against the railroads for damages. If the experience of the past is any criterion by which to judge the future, it is not prphable that there will. be any great number of jury cases heard, even if the extra term is called. Somehow our lawyers and people of Newberry, as a iile, manage' w settle litigated. cases ljefore they come into court for- triAL It may be, as a lawyer remarked, that the coming of the court helps to bring on a settlement, as many of us are inclined to postpone matters that ought to be atended to. Unless thje court is needed, how ever, the county &hould not be put to the expense of having the special term, as the finances of .this county are in a very siekly *ondition at this time.
