The following is the second paper of a series of arde es 'prepared for publication by the committee on hygi ene and legislation of the South Caro lina Medical Society: .One would indeed. be coiisidered foolish should he pay no attbntiorn to the mechanism, movemonr and care of a piece of machinery of great value and of intricate and delicate con struction which had been intruste3 to his care. Such A piece of machin ery is the human body, the perfect working of which depends upon the harmonious action and care of its several parts yet there is proBably no one - of our possessions of the strutiiYe of hih the ordinary per .gopis 1ore ignorant and to which Ui attention and care is paid. This igftoahce of structure and physiolog i6il Action of the body on the part of the majority of people is due to thfe fact that anatomy and physiology are not taught in our schools; and few of us afterward, because-of the hurry and bustle of life, have the time or inclin'ti to acquire this knowledge. Tl e ofji Syr i fil tte* of 'tir i,an.'ttin or : an nplieate arithmetial and e tel piroa lems, while he- grows up in ignorance of the composition of the clay of which he is made; and because of this ignorance abuses and lets others abuse the casket that coRtains his soul. The care of the body is called per sonal hygiene, and the object of this neper is to attempt to set forth brief ly some of the best means of develop ing and niaintaining physical and mental vigor. The body is intde up of various organs and tissues. The more, important of these will be taken up in' tu)rn and suggestions made as to their care. Oare of the Teeth. The alimentary canal extends from the mouth to the anus, and in all is about twenty-seven to thirty feet in iength. . Each of thb several portions of this canal iAs.its function to per form and the proper performance of function depende largely upon what has occurred previously to the food. For instance, the 6bjdct of the teeth is to properly masticate the food and of the stomach to digest certain kiiids of food; it is obviously impossible for the stomach to properly perfor'm its function if the food is bolted be fore having been ground up. Many cases of chironie digestion result from improper mastication, due to faulty dentition and inattention to the teeth. The care of the teeth then, is im portant, and this care. shiould be be gun in infancy and early childhood. Deformities of the teeth and jaw in many edises is produed by the perni cious habit of "thumb-sucking" in children or the use of the "comfort ,f "This latter is condemned by all hygienists. A common cause of de formity is noticed in "mouth-breath s." 4dhego ebildren often suffer *ro \y1at~ is. o'n as "adenoide," a 6.ti th hback of the nasaiss ~v~h nevent . breatiling th~o~i th le nose. Such childr'en should be taken to their physician for not only may the jaw become deform ed, but deafness and mental torpor result. It is hardly necessary to call attention to the necessity of the fre quent use of thg -tooth-brush, yet ho9w often do we see this pr'actice neglec ted.
