E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Ertered at the Postotice at New berry, S. C.. as second class matter. TUESDAY, MAY 23, 1905. In the A. R. P. Church. Elder \\. T. Bradley as ks iis to ay that Dr. F. Y. PressIev will conduct religious services in the Associate Reformed church next Saturday even ing. Sabba:h morning and Sabbath -night. He requested us particilarly -not to say Sunday. and. in deference to his wishes thle error appears. Properly speaking Sabbath is the in stitution. Sunday is the Christion Sabbath. Saturday is the Jewish Sab bath.-Abbeville Press and Banner. ,rother Wilson is himself in error ab.ut the name of the day. The New Testament, which of- course is authority. calls it the Lord's Day. That day is a weekly commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus and as the sacrament of the Supper is styled the Lord's Supper so the day of His ressurrection. the first day of the week. is the Lord's Day. The man in the legislature of South Carolina who can devise a scheme to have :he roads and bridges put. and kept. in good condition without sub jecting farm lab.or to be disturbed at a season of the year when farmers are busy, will have the lasting friendship of a large proportion of the people. A great many regard the present system of warning out hands for road work at this season of the year a blacmail ing scheme to force landowners to pay the commttation tax. It does strike us that some plan can be adopt ed which will be more satistactory than the present system.-Manning Times. The only just and equitable way to work the roads is by taxation on proper tv and a reasonable commutation for those who have no property. There is nothing that will so benefit a coun try as good public roads. but it takes money to build them. Of course. un der our present system: we do not suppose any one would warn out hands at this season of the year when the farmers are so behind with their planting and when the grass is mak ing such headway. In addition to the system ot taxa tion the convicts in the state peniten tiary should be put to work on the Pub)lic roads instead of farming. In the fight at the Laurens mill made by the commission men iin New York against Mr. WV. E. Lucas we are ~- glad Mr. Lucas won. In the first place from what we have learned the effort was no' to treat Mr. Lucas rair iv and besides if he can hav'e his goods handled for less than four per cent, he should do it and we cannot understand just why the stockholders any of them. shot-ld not help sustain Mr. Lucas. Hei has made the Laur ens mill one of the best paying pieces of property ir the state. The city council has passed an or dinance calling an election Friday. 15th day of June for t'he purpose of v'oting an issue of bonds of $y.ooo to fund the past mn debtedness of the city. This money will have to be paid and put ting the debt in this shape will save three per cent. interest each year. And then it runs the payment through several years and will make it easier to be met. The voters should vote for the bonds from the point of econ omy. ED ... ....---.------.-----. ---- * The second coutyit to vote on the onelistion of dispensary or prol hitin *unaer th'.
