The play is presented for the bene fit of the lyceum cours'. A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. Forty-Nine Buildings Burned in Brookland, Across the River From Columbia. More than half the town of Brook land, across the river from Columbia. was swept by fire on Saturday night. The fire burned a path through the town from end to end and about two blocks in width. In the burned district there was not a thing remain ing except the skeleton-like chim neys. A small part of the wall of Dr. F. L. Sandell's brick building is still standing. -This was the only brick building in the town. From the site where Boyers store had been, which was the place where the fire originated, to the open fields on Lhe south and west, where the fire fiend stopped for a lack of fuel, noth ing was left. The total number of -houses burned is 49. The total loss is $66,$$$. This amount will be partially offset by about $40,ooo insurance. The heavi est losers are Dr. E. L. Sandell, Shull & Dent, M. H. Witt, Shuler & Lybrand, George W. Lybrand, S. A. Moak and L. W. Moak. SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. Items of More or Less Interest Con densed in the State. There has been much speculation as to who would succeed Col. James L. Orr as president of the Piedmont mills and of the Orr mill. Mr. W. D. Beattie, of Greenville, and Mr. J. D. Hammett, of Honea Path. have been mentioned. It is reported from Gaffney that the Piedmont Mineral Springs com pany, which was recently incorporat ed with a capital stock of $25,000. will build a new 'hotel and erect a num ber of cottages at Piedmont springs and will make the place an ideal sum mer resort. Mr. J. T. Smith, Jr., a promin'ent citizen of Williston, was shot irom ambush while iiding 'through a nar row strip of woods about a mile from Wflliston <>n Friday evening. Mr. Smith was returning from his farm. Two shots were fired and t-he horse was seen coming out of-dhe. woods without its rider. Both sho.ts took effect. Mr. Smith's watch was mis sing, giving color to the theory of robbery as the motive for the crime. T'he Columbia boat company has been chartered, a sufficient amount of the c'apital of $20,ooo having been subscribed, and work on building the boat will commence at once. The green grocery store of W.: H. Swain, in Spartanburg. was broken open on Thursday night. the sate rolled from the very fromt of the store, out the rear door, and the door battered open with a sledge hammer. the robbers securing from $70 to $8o. The daring robbery occurred, in the business part of the city. Edgar Sampson. a negro boy 18 years old, attempted a crimi nal assault upon the 6-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Rivers, in Columbia, on last Tuesday. The cries of the child frightened off the brute and the Sent f.)r, the casc was L;uietly worked up and the negro aas l cated in an other county. News reached Fdgefield that lr. John C. Bussey. a section foreman. formerly of Edgefield county, was killed near Sneed's a small station in Georgia. his death being the result of deotion to duty. Mr. Bnssey with his force was traveling on the rail road in a hand car, which they at tempted to take off the track rut of the way of an approaching: train. While engaged in the work Mr. Bus sey was killed. The car was remov ed and the train went on its way in safety. Mr. A. E. Carmichael. who con ducts a small fruit store in Florence, was murderously assaulted and rob bed on Thursday night, as he was go i-)g to his room, in one of the princi pal thoroughfares of the city.' He was struck over the head with some blunt instrument and his pockets were rifled, about ninety dollars and a watch being taken. It was not known what the result of the wound would be. NOTICE.
