The question of a union depot for Newberry has been agitated so much and so long, without result, that the subject has become a little wearisome even to the most earnest advocates of a union station. But there was never a better time to build the depot than now, and we believe if the people of Newberry will unite on one proposition and present that proposition to the railroads in the proper manner, the two railroads, both of which can not but see the urgent need for a union station in Newberry, will accede to or the wishes of our people and build a station in keeping with the progress a and advancement of the city. When the matter was taken up t with the railroads several months ago President Childs, of the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens. held that the a best place to build a union station was at the Caldwell street crossing, near the junction of the two roads, and stated that if the people of New berry would unite upon that site his C 1 n road would be willing to put a suffi cient amount of money in the build- dc ing to insure a modern depot. Tak- t ing everything into consideration, we believe the site suggested by Mr. co Childs is the best place for the sta tion. Not only would the location be n convenient, but amodern depot at this point would aid very materially in ra y nrat building up this section of the city. C( The objection has been urged that r the Southern railway only a short while ago went to the expense of erecting a modern passenger station. The business of the Southern rail way, however, must increase in New- da berry, and we believe the Southern C would be willing to use its present passenger station for offices, using the present freight depot for a ware house. What we need is for our people to get together in urging upon the rail roads the need for a union depot in Newberry, first uniting upon a site.
