M. H. AULL., EDITOR. FRIDAY. APRIL 22, 1904. The Confederate Reunion. The State Confederate reunion will be held in Charleston May 17. IS. and 19. Every veteran who is able should attend. This is going to be the last time that many of them will touch elbows until they meet in the great beyond, for "the thin gray line is growing thinner every day and the ranks are marching into the 4hadow land. We have attended a number of thes. reunions and we know what a pleasure it is to the old soldiers to gr.asp the hands of comrades with whom'they shared the dangers and the privations and sorrows and the glory of the camping grounds and the battlefields 0i% strife the like of which history has not yet recorded. We want to se: the veterans go to Charleston if they can. There the first step in the great tragedy was taken, there the old soldier is loved passionately. and there he will be royally welcomed and his stay made pleasant. Now for Parker. The actioh of the New York dem ocratic convention, in instructing its delegates to vote as a unit for the nomination of Judge Alton Brooks Parker for president, practically as sures the nomination of Judge Par ker at the St. Louis convention. Be fore this'endorsement by the democ racy of New York Parker had de veloped a remarkable strength in the southern states and now many of the states which have heretofore been doubtful or waiting on the action of New York, will fall into the Parker column. There are bright prospects now for democratic harmony and we believe democratic harmony this year meats democratic success. The biggest ob stacle in the,way is Bryan. Bryan has given notice that he will deliver an address in.Chicago on Saturday night on "The New York Platform." What he is going to do no man can tell: He still has a big following in the party and his influence is yet worth a great deal, It is not in his power to elect the democratic ticket, but it may be -in his power to defeat it. That's where the trouble lies. 3.Record-of a Century. The Cehtennial Edition of the News and Courier, which was issued on Wednesday morning, is one of the handsomest and most comlpete pub lications of it's kind that it has been our pleasure. to. see. It is the record * f a century's existence. ef a great newspaper; and.:the record of a news paper is the .record of a people, for its successes are thei-. successes, its failiares are their failures, and its joys and sorrows are their joys and sor rows.~ The history of the growth and *development of the News and Courier is .almost coincident with the history of the growth and development of the republic, and both are fully coy ered in this Cen.tennial Edition. There is %othing lacking, and everything is of .interest and value, for in it are mirrowed the action and thought of South Carc:ina and of the union for a hundred years. We wish the News and Courier an other century of usefulness and of success and then another, and that it may get out many more centennial editions. The New ,York Sun takes the Con gressional Record index from March a8 to April 10 and compares Mr. Hearst's recor-d with that of Mr. Sul zer, whose district adjoins - Mr. Hearst's.
