The wiser re publican politicians are manifest im no little alarm over these de ve!ol:ments. since they realize that, suchi evidences of extravagance may prove a dangerous weapon in the hands of their opponents in a campaign before the people, and. tIere is Iuci etort in consequence tt c.over uD the facts. Despite the running to cover which followed the diclosures bre.ught out by the $o.ooo-stable bill. it has been impossible for the' republican politicians to conceal the many unpleasant facts which serve to illustrate the wanton e travagance of the present admiris-, tration. This has been accompa nied by a reckless disregard of the sacredness of the relics of former administrations which has shock ed the people who seem to hold to the idea that there have been a few presidents worthy of a place in the memiory of the American people. When Mr. rV-evelt entered the white house. it was supposed that the old build ing had been put in excellent con (Ition. True the corridors were furnished in simple taste and there was an absence from the rooms of anything like tavdry hangings. but there was on every side - the sug Cestion of historic interest and the lhomelike residence.' befitting the democratic idIea of what a presi dent stands for. In striking contrast with all this are the gold panels that meet the eve on every side, fanciful contrap tions shadi'ng yillow. green, blue andi pnrple lights: all sorts ot es sentially modern decorations which tainiulv clash with the simple co ionial lines of the building. ( ne is astotunded to read the cost. the nation has been forced to pay for all this extravagance. First, an approp)r'ation of S475-445 was slip ped into the sundry civil service bill in Itune, igo.t to cover the cost of this~so-called "restoration." in c:t.ad of calling on the army of ar Chitects which the government enm ploys for the construction of its public buildings throughout the country, and wvhich numbers in its ranks 'some of the leading archi tects in the United States, $65,ooo was paid to a New York firm, the head of which had the good fortune to be a personal friend of the then secretary of wvar. Mr. Root. to furn ish the plans for what proved to be the most i9agrant piece of vandal ism which any president has ever hadl the nerve to commit upon one of the treasured traditions of this country. It is all this and a great deal more that is causing conservative republicans to ask: "WVhat are we coming to?" CURIOUS STORY FROM COLLETON. It is Said That a Man Has Confessed to the Murder of His Wife, for Which Three Negroes Were Lynched. Charleston Post. A story is being told in Colleton county that Section Foreman Tones of the Atlantic Coast Line. while on his deathbe'd a few weeks ago. confeised to 1he murder of his wvife, who was killed at Ravenel in May. 1902. and that the three negroes. * im Black. lames Ford and Thom as Prvor, wi'ho were lynched for the crime, were entirelv innocent of it. The murder of Mrs. Jones was one of the most shocking ever com mitted in the State. Her dead body was found one morning during the latter part of May in the dog house in the rear of her yard with the throat cut and the head crushed in from terriffic blows delivered with some heavy instrument. The body of the murdered woman was dis covered by her little daughter, who reported to her father, who was at work down the railroad track, that her mother had been killed. Hur rying home Jones found the body in the dog house and he seemed completely overcome with grief. It was believed that the crime was committed by negroes for the puirpose of robbery. The theory was that the negroes wvent to Jones' re.idence that morning after he had goerf to w.rk. killed Mirs. Jones and dragged her body into the yard and threw it into the dog house and b,ecame frightened and ran away before looting the house. The news of the killingr spread over Colleton county and armed men started in pursuit of Black. Prvor and Ford, who, it is said. had been seen near the jones cot tage In the morning of the tragedy.
