We notice that Anderson has raised her share of the Hampton monument fund and that the An derson chamber of Commerce has agreed to appropriate half of the $oo asked from Anderson county for carrying out the purposes of the State Immigration convention, pro vided the farmers' institute will appropriate the other half. These are the marks of a live and progres sive county,-a county whcih hou ors the memory of the man who made possible South Carolina's pres. ent developement and a county which is willing to make a small out lay now in order that it, with the rest of the State, may reap an abun dant harvest in the future. What has Newberry done in re gard to these matters? The lower branch of the generai assembly, in the passage of the bili to prevent treating to liquors on election days, has done its share towards adding another dead letter to a statute book already over-bur dened with a three-pound, twenty inch pistol law and other dead let ter laws which work a positive harm for the reason that a law which can not be enforced tends to breed disrespect for all law. Let us assume a case which will be cov ered by the anti-treating bill passed last week by the house. Suppose two gentlemen from Newberry should meet in ColuiAbia during the progress of an aldermanic election, or some election in which they have no interest whatever. Shall the law say that one of these gentlemen snall not take the other to his room and offer him a drink of whiskey? We hope the bill will -find its rightful place in the senatorial burying ground. Mayor Earhardt recently in creased the number of members of the board of health to six. The State law provides that "the mayor. shall designate one-fifth of the members of the board to serve one year, one-fifth two years, one fifth to serve for three years, one fisth to serve for four years,aud one Sfifth to serve for five years, and .-thereafter one-fifth of the number of said board shall be appointed annually to serve for five years"' It looks as if one of the members of the Newberry board must be cut ynfie pieces, one piece to be taken off the board each year for five years and that some man not a member of the board must be cut into five pieces, one piece to be put on each year for five years. Respectfully referred to the city attorney. William J. Bryan says that he still believes in free slver but that -his European trip gave him "one new idea." That is good. Mr. Bry an is a great and brainy man, but a new idea will do him good. We hope the citizens of School District No. r4, in which is com prised the town of Prosperity, will attend the meeting called to be held in Prosperity this afternoon and take some action looking towards the early erection of a new school building. The old building has long since served its use. If Prosperity is to keep in line with the educationia advancement of the State, she must have a school building in which patrons and pupils and citi zens generally may take some pride. It is gratifying to note the busy preprations of hour energetic far mer for the next crops. FOR A NEW SCHOOL BUUNG. January iS.-The stockholders' meeting of the Peo Iples, National bank of Prosperity was held last week. The same board was re-elected without any change, and the board of directors re-elected the same bank officers, as follows: M. A. Carlisle, Esq., of Newberry, president; Col. H. C. Moseley, vice president; Mr. W. W. Wheeler, cashier. A call, over the names of Dr. C. T. Wyche and Mr. B. B. Schumpert as officers of the school board of trustees, has been posted requesting a meeting of the citizens of school district No. 14, tomorrow, January 19, at 3 o'clock p. m., in the school house to devise some plan for build ing a school house for the district. The importance of this question is probably admitted by all citizens of the district. The question at vari ance is how this buildiug is to be erected; that is., how the- money shall be raised. The chief interest of the citizens' meeting will doubt less ce,tre around this question. and it is a question in which every one is interested, and vitally interested. This interest should be manifested by attending the meeting tomorrow afternoon. This question should be settled peacefully and harmoniously and it is in the power of every one in the district to contribute to that end by his presence or her presence at this meeting called by the board. A citizens' meeting of the town was held last week and put in mo tion the machinery of a democratic primary for nominating officers for this municipality in the spring elec tion. This a departure for cur town. Mrs. J. D. Q.uattebaum's musi cal recital drew a full house, and furnished an entertainment that was wholesome and refreshing. Mr. Rembert McKain, after spend ing his holidays with his parents here, has returned to his work at Greycourt. Miss Eugenia Summer is here vis iting Miss Georgia Schumpert. Messrs. Hawkins Bros. have a new man, Mr. Cleveland, in the machine department Mr Jacob A. Dominick, of Kin ards. is spending a few days here, his old home. Mr. A. N. Ciosson made a trip! to Saluda last week. Mr. J. L. Wise is off on a busi ness trip St. Louis. County Pension Board. The County Pension Board will meet on Monday, February 1st, in, the County Auditor's ofhice at ten a. m. Al_1 applicants must be pres ent. If anyone knows cause why an applicant should not be pensioned, or why any-name now on the roll should be dropped, Chairman Pet erson says he would like to know it. Come and give him the infor mation. Parlor Concerts. The ladies of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer are arrang ing to give a series of parlor con certs in their new parsonage.
