The minority of the committee .on military affairs of the senate has -pre a report giving reasons -why General Wood's appointment -should not be confirmed by the -senate. The Daughters of the Confed --eracy of the city of Savannah re -fused to send a wreath of laurel to lay upon the grave of General Uongstreet, in accordance with the -custom of the order. The refusal was on the ground that General Longstreet disolieyed orders on the field of Gettysburg. A number of distinguished Dem -ocrats of the country gathered in New York last week at a dinner given in honor of Col. McClellan, the new Democratic mayor of New York. The subject of a suitable -presidential candidate was alluded to and Mr. Olney suggested Grover Cleveland. Cleveland was not pre sent, but expressed his regrets. Governor Montagne, of Virginia, -has vetoed a bill passed by the as sembly forbidding State banks to is zsue currency on the ground that, though the privilege had not exer -ised for many years by the large tax imposed by the national gov ernment, Fet no one could foresee when it might be most desirable or urgent to exercise such authority. COMFORT FOR THE SERIOUS. Men May, And very Often Do, Achieve Success After Reaching An Old Age. Augusta Chronicle. While it is true that the demand *for competent .young :nen is very great, the serious need not despair. A large number of old men are holding their own and the young *men find it a difficult task to dis place them. A vigorous.old man sot too old-with health of body and alertness of mind, full of wis-) -dom, experience and character, willi succeed even in this age, if he also possess an undaunted spirit. The Kansas City World hoots at the accepted maxim or proverb that, unless a man has made his mark or *secured his fortune at 40 years, he might as well throw up the sponge and admit final defeat. It pithily says: 'It is a commonly accepted say ing that unless a man is well along toward success before he is 40 years of age he will never succeed. "The statemnent is untrue. It is too broad. The facts are against it. "A study of the lives of success ful men will show that success comes to most men after rather than before 40. Is it financial suc cess? Who has made a great for tune before he was 40? "Or politics? Few men get arte in politics before 40. "T he facts are, most men at the: age of 4o are just ready for success-: ful endeavor. They have made mis-i takes. In that way they have learned experience. They have dis covered their limitations. They have found where they belong. It is not necessary to quote in stances. Life and literature are full of them. Men have distinguished themselves at 49, 5o, 6o, 70 and even at So years-seldom before 40. "Fortunate indeed is he who is well on the way to success at 40. Fully as fortunate he, though un successful, who at 5o has learned the world and himself and has not lost courage. " ''Courage. That's the main thing. "You can't keep a brave man down, no matter what his age. He may fall but he will rise. And some day he will have his charmed circle where none durst walk but he. ' ' "Are you 4o, or more? "Are you fairly fitted to begin life? No young man can buy your 1 experience. You know things as they are. No illusions. You know your fellow man. You know your self. And out of this knowledge you are mightily equipped to or ganize victory out of defeat." The main thing is Courage.! Of course, if the old man loses heart, and ceases to be bravely per sistent, his chances of restoring any lost ground are slim, almost noth ing. But there are not a few seniors, over 40 years considerably, who gallantly and cheerfully determine, with God's aid, to keep in the pro cession of lieand not be rudel jostled from the line of march. It: my be, yes, it often is, a stern and discouraging battle,- but the old maxim still true that ''fortune favors the brave." So, we say to the seniors, do not despond. Keep your fortitude. Fight on valorously. Our Kansas City contemporary sounds the true key-note. It is courage-courage of the right kind and unfaltering trust in Providence. The seniors need not take back seats or retire from the contest just because some body invents proverbs for their dis comfiture. Every proverb thus utter ed is not a true one. Courage! Cour age!
