Tribute of Respect. The following tribute to the life of Mr. E. W. Hiers, a member of the senior class of Newberry college, who died ar his home at Weimer on Christmas day, was adopted on Tuesday morning by the faculty and students of the college, after which the exercises were suspended for the day out of respect to Mr. Hiers' memory: The old adage, "Nothing but good concerning the dead," express es a sentiment beautiful and almost divine; but an expression of that which is God-like and more beauti ful is a just tribute to a life "which requires neither the touch of charity to gild its virtues, nor the shroud and coffin to conceal its deformities," a life which merits the speaking of the "good," not simply because it is ended, but because it was worthy. Such a life was that of Eddie Win gard Hiers. He was born October 30, iSg3; entered college October 2, 1goo; was regularly promoted to the senior class in June, 1903: and died on Christmas Day, 1903. There are few surroundings in which the life and character of a man are more fully tested than i. a college community. No higher eulogy can be spoken of our friend than this: He stood the test, and gained from year to year in the good will of his school mates and in the respect and esteem of the faculty. In, testimony of our affection and esteem, of the sinceresorrow of our hearts, and of our true sympathy with his loved ones wh.; grieve, Resolved, That this tribute to his memory be adopted. Resolved, That a copy be sent to his family and a copy furnished the Stylus, the Lutheran visitor, and each of the Newberry papers for publication. President George B. Cromer and Dr. A. J. Bowers spoke to the reso lutions, both paying very beautiful tributes to the life that was ended. The occasion was very solemn and impressive and faculty and -students displayed deep feeling.
