It appears, that as early as the I.tth century, the people alieady had nunc idea of the great importance of economy; for it is written, that during the reign of WilhelMius Kieft. alias William the Testy, second govern or of New-Ainsterdam, now called New-York, (he was raised to the governor's clmir in the year of our Lord, one thousand, ?i\ hundred and thirtv-fonr} this inestimable virtue began to dis play itself. It is not stated that William the IVsty was the inventor of it -should this prove to he the case, surely a costly monument ought to be erected to the memory of so great a man. During the reign of his successor, Peter Stuyvesant. more generally called Peter the Headstrong, great improvements in economy were made, and the nation thereby greatly be- ( nefitted. Time and space will not allow me to dwell on .particulars, and I must therefore refer my readers to the History of New-York, pub lished in that city in the year 181*2, and written by Diedericli Knickerbocker, a very ingenious gentleman, and who deserves great praise and credit for the trouble lie teems to have taken in collecting all important matters, which can, in tiny degree, promote the clearing up of doubtful matters, or illustrate the ancient history of his country.
