State tla/.etle. ;t}>pc:it.s to he lest in wonder and
admiration at the frugality and economy of the
grand councils of his coiintrv. and recommends

individual*. Had th'u gentleman consulted his
tory a little, lie would have found tlint the pro
cerus in the iiiiproveiiient of this virtue Itas hard
ly kept pace with the improvements in others,
perhaps of less importance, and arts and scien
re* generally. It appears, that as early as the
I.tth century, the people alieady had nunc idea
of the great importance of economy; for it is
written, that during the reign of WilhelMius
Kieft. alias William the Testy, second govern
or of New-Ainsterdam, now called New-York,
(he was raised to the governor's clmir in the
year of our Lord, one thousand, ?i\ hundred and
thirtv-fonr} this inestimable virtue began to dis
play itself. It is not stated that William the
IVsty was the inventor of it -should this
prove to he the case, surely a costly monument
ought to be erected to the memory of so great
a man. During the reign of his successor, Peter
Stuyvesant. more generally called Peter the
Headstrong, great improvements in economy
were made, and the nation thereby greatly be- (
nefitted. Time and space will not allow me to
dwell on .particulars, and I must therefore refer
my readers to the History of New-York, pub
lished in that city in the year 181*2, and written
by Diedericli Knickerbocker, a very ingenious
gentleman, and who deserves great praise and
credit for the trouble lie teems to have taken in
collecting all important matters, which can, in
tiny degree, promote the clearing up of doubtful
matters, or illustrate the ancient history of his
country.
I lately read somewhere, (but I do not recol
lect the author, but sure I am it is no dream,)
that in the early settlement of this country by
Kurnpeaus, it was required that a |n>on, "who
would go as a member to the national assembly,
should drive hi* own waggon, without any com
ment why r The reasons I conjecture were as
follows :?A man, in po>session of a waggon and
hordes, I presume was then considered as great a
man as he who, in our dnys, ridiM in a coach
with four j and though the convenient mode of
travelling by stages and steamboats was not
then established, tlie members still could travel
in style to the rendey.vou* of the wisdom of the
nation. '2d. That travelling in this mode, he
could carry provision* enough for himself mid
his horses dining their stay there ; and .?dlv?
as it expressly said tlint l.e himself should drive
the waggon, 1 suppose he was not allowed to
take, a servant with him, and was therefore
obliged to feed and clean his on n horses ; u hich
was a thing well calculated to prevent his
thought* from soaring too high, ami to put him
in mind that he. was the representative of a free
people, every honest man of which vras as good
as himself.
The amount of the salnry the members then
received is not mentioned, but I conclude it was
no doubt a great deal less than it is at present.
Hut it is true that living at the rate an ingenious
gentleman lately exhibited to the public* by the
plain argument of multiplication and addition,
no man can expect to make a inonicd fortune by
it i but ought not the patriot sacrifice a little
ease, and live a little less splendid, until his
country very eonveniently affords the means?
If the government were able to pay all its debts*
take in its treasury notes and stocks of all de?
xchptions, andhau tho millions of specie in the

ing the pay of the members of Congress would
not lintfe displeased any rational and generous
man. I trust the respective state legislatures
will increase the salary of the governors and
judges ; for the duties, responsibilities and pay
of thorto important personages will bear but an
ill companion with that of a member of Con
gress, Hut, hail glorious Economy! thou hast

About three years ago the house of Mr. I)ou?
