' ?. i It is a familiar fact to many or our readers, hat in tlic olden time, previous to the war, several large turpentine farms were sueccs[ally and profitably carried on here, and :hat it was owing entirely to the general levastation which this country suffered from .he passage of Sherman's army, in 18(55, :hat the business ceased to be profitable. Even now, some of our friends are engaged in this business and they speak anything but lespondingly of- their success/. The only thing of which any of them complain is the lack of capital, with which they could easily regulate labor and control it, thereby making the business still more profitable than it now -'1 IS. This County abounds in large, yes, immense tracts of land, thick, by wooded by the pine and peculiarly adapted to the cultivation and production of rosin and turpentine.? These lands are very noar the Wateree river, and can he rented for a mere song. Should a purchase be desired, there arc many persons here who would willingly sell their superabundant wood lands at a very small price, and upon the most reasonable terms. Now would be the time to purchase lands, for our people are coming to the conclusion that it is best to economize in their; lands and utilize them as much as possible. ! In point of health, we have no hesitation j in saying that we know of 110 county* more blessed in this respect than ourB. and it is exceedingly unusual for any disease of a malarial or fatal type to spring up, which in any way interferes with the cultivation of the soil or any branch of industry or coin- I uaerce. I11 view of all these nuuy a .vantages, we hope that all kindness and courtesy will be exhibited to the strangers who may come here to make necessary investigations before concluding to settle among us, and that our people will take pleasure in showing to them their lands or aiding them in anyother manner to build up our waste places.
