TftE Court Continues.?In the case of Joel A. Schrock, the Defendant, was acquitted, on Friday last. Kent Whitaker, convicted of manslaughter, was sentenced to two years imprisonment, at hard labor in the penitentiary. Nelson Pittifoot, -convicted of assault and battery, was sentenced to three months in the county jail, he having been there about three months already. The Court of Sessions was. then adjourned and the Common Pleas convened. The remainder of Saturday morning was consumed in calling the Calendars and appointing days for the trial of causes. Owing to the indisposition of his Honor, Judge Melton, no Court was held on Monday. George Ballard vs. S. C. R. R. Co. was heard Tuesday and Wednesday, resulting in a verdict for plaintiff for ?3,6S1 50. The case of E. B. Cantcy vs. Theodore Lane: was heard to the hour of adjournment yesterday. _ A Brutal AssauLt^-Wc have been credibly informed that on last Saturday afternoon, a brutal assault'was committed upon the person of John Pickett, by John Jackson and two of his brothers, on the the western side of Watcrce. Our informant states, that while crossing Chesnut's ferry that afternoon, John Jackson and Pickett became involved in an altercation, and that Pickett struck Jackson, after which they made friends, and proceeded on their way, riding together for more than a mile. 'That Jackson suddenly disappeared, and shortly afterwards the party separated, Pickett going home, alone. After proceeding a short distance, he found" himself confronted by John Jackson and his two brothers, who at once set upon him, struck him with an immense club, ten-- inches in circumference, by measure, and beat hiin most brutally.? They then left him. Mr;TPickett has since been laid up. \ He has, however, taken out i warrant against the pfttf.ics. We do not know, whether the above-is a correct version of the affair, or not,^pt we give it as it was told to ns, by a gentleman whoso veracity we do not .doubt, who himself had received ? A r . i tue information ironi a party wno was perfectly conversant with the particulars. i l I : The Mystery Solved.?Just as we were going to "press lafit week; w^meirtfonctTihe arrival'of a ^qa:td~of Unitcd'StatcS soldiers) who did not know why they were sent here, and that we had.our suspicions which we would wait to see verified or not, as tho case might be: f ' 1 Thoser suspicions proved correct. We are informed that the circumstances arc as follows: Some time since, Messrs, T. J., Ancrum. jr., and A. H. Boy kin, went into the store of F. Goss, a prominent radical, about 3 o'clock in the afternomr, to purchase someaiiurau lucicuiioirifavlug aFIsen) Mr. Antrum struck Goss with a small riding switch. Thereupon* Goss took out a warrant against both of the young men, for assault and battery, issued by J. F. Sutherland, Esq., Trial Justice. They were arrested and bound over to appear at the present term of Court of Sessions. In tho neantime, Goss makes an affidavit and has a varraht issued from the United States Court, bringing the ease under the Ku-Klux Bill. A United States Marshal, Sherman >y name, eame over, supported by the solvere and their bayonets, and arrested Messrs. \ncrum and Buykin, who were takeu before Commissioner Gaylo, and bound over to ap)ear at the U. S. Court to be held at Colmibia, on the 4th day of next month. To he credit of tho Marshal be- it saidj he did tot carry the soldiers with him, but went lown tjnietly and performed his unpleasant luty, as agreeably as was possible, under he circumstances. When called upon by Judge Melton to mow whether ho be had any bills to bo giv;n out to the Grand Jury, J. M. Davis, Esq., acting Solicitor, stated tj his Honor, hat ho had been informed that a prosecution lad been entered in the U. S. Court against Messrs. Bovkin and Ancrum, by Goss for he sumo offence for which he tjieti had a jill to give out, but did not do so, preferring ;o wait until it was seen what was to be done in the United States Court. This is a rather unusual case, but it really s nothing more nor less than a simple as?ult and battery, and has nothing more to lo with Ku Kluxism than a larceny has.? rho result of this attempt to gratify malice will soon be seen, as the U. S. Court will sonvene in Columbia next week. Messrs. Ancrum and Bovkin have en ;oged counsel, who will appear for them if it Dccomes necessary. Latest Cotton Quotations. - New York, Sept. 26.
