General Schuyler was not u J then in active military service, but, at K . his house at Albauy or at Saratoga, ho g, t was the vigilant eyo of the northern de- Li > part men t. His person tsa prisoner was j* 1 desired by the British, and a party of ' Indians was sent to capture him. As w , the twilight of a sultry day in August B i was-yielding to the night, Schuyler and a > his family were sitting in the great hall ? ! of the mansion; the servants were about <> , the premises; three of the guard were H asleep in the basement, and the other ^ I three were lying on the grass in front a ' of the mansion. A servant announoed ^ ( that a person at the back gate wished to r speak with the general. His errand was I understood. The doors and windows of P( > the mansion were immediately closed a | and barred, the family were gathered in t an upper room, and the general ran to B r his bedroom for his arms. Hooking out - of a window, he saw the house surround? ed by armed men. To alarm the town, u t half a mile distant, he fired a mstol from his -window. At the same moment the B t intruders burst open the front door. At ? that instant Mrs. Sohuyler perceived ^ that in the confusion she had left her in- o 5 fant in a cradle in the hall below. She E I was about to rush down the stairs after 0 it, when the general interposed and pre- f ventod her. Her third daughter, Mar- ? } garet, instantly flew down the great c stairway, snatched the sleeping bal>e B > from the cradle, and bore it up to its E - mother. One of the Indians hurled a c sharp tomahawk at her. Its keen blade * ' just grazed tho infant's head, and was j 3 buried in tho railing of the stair, c - Meyer, supposing her to be a servant, p D called to her, as she flew up the stairs: 5 "Where's yonr master?" With quick * 9 thought she exclaimed, as she reached t t the verge of the upper hall: "Gone to i r alarm the town 1" Her father heard p i- her, and with as quick thought threw c up a window and called out, as to a mul- ( 1 titude: " Come on, my brave fellows 1 f . Surround the house, and secure the vil; lains!" The alarmed marauders, who ] 1 were plundering the general's dining- i ? room of the plate, fled in haste, carrying " 3 away some of the booty. That infant ( i was the late Mrs. Catherine Van Rennsolaer Cochran, General Schuyler's \ ~ youngest child, who died at Oswego in ? the summer of 1857.
