!. t ? * The Beaufort Tribune. ? * WEDNESDAY, OCT. 20. 1873 fcifThe family ofChicf Enginwr King U. S. N. left yesterday morning for Washington. Mr. King cxpcctB to be ordered to Washington next month hnvlng served one year on the monitor Dictator, the "? longest period any officer' is obliged to spend on h Monitor. t^rrhe Halo of the property of MnuldinjOwcus & Co. takes place tomorrow, affording an excellent opportunity for nny ?me uesmng 10 go lnio mc sawmill business to purchase a mill in good or<l?nr. A large lot of personal property ? wfll also l>c sold and some bargains may lie had. k laiF^They have a way of buying cotton on Hilton Head that is decidedly unique. Two buyers approach a colored man who has cotton to sell and each drawB a pistol and cocks it, whereupon the colorI *ed planter is induced to sell without any great waste of time or argument as to price. py~The U. 8. Revenue cutter Boutwell came up to Beaufort last Mondav, and on her way up the river discovered a * bank that surprised her and so great was her delight that she sat on the barnc all night. She retnrncd to Savannah and will be here again in a few days if she does not get on another bank. Her eruising ground extends from St. Helena sound to Fcrnandina. ^ * t^P~A tramp from Savannah mnde i himself a nuisance last Wednesday by getting drunk and invading several houses in search of food. He was arrested and placed in the sweatbox over aiight and the next morning the acting | rntendant sentenced him to four days In : the same institution or to leave town before one o'clock. He concluded to leave The Freetltnan'ii Bank. As it is announced the Commissioners ' of the "Frccdman's Saving and Trust Company" will pay a dividend of twenty per cent, to depositors on the 1st. of November next, at Washington, D. C. ttie Southern Express will afford a reliable and prompt medium for collecting the dividend for account of depositors. Our colored friends should make a note ' of this. The Hcaafort^Ljrcenm. The Beaufort Lyceum having finished fitting up their new hall (over Odell's bakery) will give the first dramatic entcr* tainment Tuesday evening Oct. 2dth, on which occasion will be given by special I* request Mortons original farce entitledi "To Paris and back for ?5.;" to be followed for the first time by J. P. Wooter's flnin.i'nmin rlmmn in fu*n nolo T>l?iPa Birthday." As the Lyceum have at great expense fitted up their new hal! and making preparations for these two plays, , thev hope to see the house well filled, and , they promise to give an entertainment worth the patronage of the public. |^"At the last n? eting of the town council an Ordinance was introduced allowing the Iutenduut a salary of $600. a year. We are in favor ol this action as the Intend >nf has a great deal to do if he attends to hir. duty; but we hope the Ordinance wiii ben men did so that should the Intendant be absent the salary will be paid to the acting Tnteudant, during such absence. Council also pioposcs to 1 prevent horses and mules running at , ? lurge ou our streets, and have had the Ordinance on the subject printed for dis tribution, and instructed the marshal to see that it is enforced. JpgfMr. J. A. "Whitman, proprietor of the Beaufort Machine Shop, has occupied his spare time in building a steamboat for his own comfort. The craft is a cred it to its builder and shows that he knows . his business, as he not only built the boat ; but oIbo the boiler and the entire engino in his own shop. An experimental trip shows that the boat can make ten miles an hour, and can conveniently carry twenty-five passengers. The engine is constructed with all the modern inventions and although we had it all explained to us our head is too thick to rememl?cr the various new wrinkles which go to make her a model craft. Y Og The Town Couiieti. The town council met in the council chumlicr Wednesday Oct. 18, all the memlicrs present. The Intendant being al?cnt Warden (luge, as acting Intendant, | presided. The committees on account and finance asked further time, which was granted. Warden Boyce gave notice of an Ordinance to raise supplies for the year 1875 and for other purposes, which passed the first reading. Warden Washington gave ' ' notice of an Ordinance fixing the salary of the Intendunt oftlie town, which passed its first reading. This Ordinance provides a salary of $600. to the Intendunt. A certificate for $42,75 was ordered in favor of J. C. Rivers, late marshal, the balance due him on salary. A petition from the citizens in regard to tho OVI inn lice prohibiting the running of bhr lb and mules in the town, and asking a modification of the same, was received as information, an'; on motio i of Ward?-ii Qh nves it was ordered that 100 cop|^. ies of $i.c. 2. of >nid Ordinance bo printed. t. Warden Gage garo notice of an Ordinance to prevent objec-ionable dogs from running at largo, widen passed its first reading. The time for meeting of council was fixed hereafter at 7 p. m. f] A special meeting was held on Friday night at which nothing of importance transpirod. Tho Port Royal Railroad la transporting cotton from Augusta to Port Royal and thence by steamer to Savannah. The steamer Carrie carried 200 >3 bales from Port Royal last Monday. Ro- v oeiver Wilson cannot bo choked off by the refusal to receive freight in Bavaunah by way of the 8. & C. R. R., and finds the river quite us con vel neat to supply Savannah with Augusta cotton.
