FARM, GARDEN AND HOUSEHOLD Questions and Answers. Salt for Wheat.?H. O. A., Ten nessee, asks : "Can salt be put upoi wheat 'and without injury to the wheat I have a god deal on hand, which ! would like to apply to my land, if it ii of any value as a fertilizer. " Reply.?Sa t is frequently of grea benefit to the wheat crop. It helps t .stiffen the straw and to give a bright clear grain. The quantity usually ap plied is two to three bushels per acre sown early in the spring. If sown i the fall it will be dissolved and wasjie beyond reach of the roots by the winte rains at the time when the growth of th crop is suspended, and no advantage cai be gained from its use. Salt has ver much the same effect as lime upon tin soil, but must be used in very mucl smaller quantities on account of th chlorine contained in it. Chlorine, a well as soda, is injurious to vegetatioi wUen used in excess. Rte won Winter Feed.?T. M. New York, asks : "Can rye be profit ably grown in cornfields for fall and win tor pasture* f If so, when should it l> sown, how much seed is required pe acre, and what is the best way of covei ingthe seed ?" Reply.?Rye can be very profitabl; grown for fall and early spring feet upon a oora stubble. As soon as tli corn is cut and shocked the groom should be sown with two and a half o; three bushels of ry o, and the field work ed with a ooinmon cultivator so as tt oover the seed thoroughly, but not tot deeply. The best way is to go across th corn rows, by which the drills, if am have been plowed up, are leveled. Th< corn should be cut as Boon as it is glazed so as to permit the seed to be sown early If the season is favorable the rye wil give good pasturage before the winter but not through the winter in this lati tude. Where the winter is open, ant some growth is made, it will make goot winter pasturage. It may be pasture* down early in the spring, and then plow ed under for the oat cron. Catarrh rw OattjjE.?O. R., Basket N. Y., writes : Some two months age I noticed a cough in my young cattl< and it is getting worse. It is spreading to my old oows. I never saw anything o the kind before. They discharge at th< nose and eyes. What can I do foi them? Some of my neighbor's cattle are troubled in the same way f" Reply.?From the very incomplete statement of the symptoms exhibited b; these cattle it is difficult to say with oer tointy what ails them. Discharge fron the noee and oongh are symptoms o several complaints to which cattle ari subject. If there are no other promi nent symptoms than those it is probabli that the disease is simply catarrh, whict has been caused or aggravated by th< late unfavorable weather. If in addi tion to the above symptoms there i some fever, which may be known by th dryness of the skin of the muzzle be tween the mouth and nostrils and scant; discharge from'the nose, the following should be given morning and night nnt the muzzle becomes moist, viz : Sci phato of potash, two ounces; watei one pint. This should bo administer*, by means of a horn or a long-necked bol tie placed between the jaws whei e ther are no teeth. The horn is by far th safest instrument, as the bottle may b broken and pieces of glass swallowed One-half must be given to each yeai ling, and a quarter to a calf. Luke war: bran-water, or linseed meal tea should b given, with a tea-spoonful of gingc stirred in it, every evening, and the am mals should be kept dry and not ei posed to the rain. If the nostrils ar washed with weak vinegar and water : will be useful. Common pine-tar give in doses of one tablespoonful twice day has been found useful in catarrl combined with good nursing.?N. 1 21met, IltntH far Ike Household. Barberries.?Preserve them the bam as currants; or they may be preserve in molasses. Piok them from the stem and put them into a jng or jar with m< lasses to oover them.
