The Influence of School Life on the ?rTous System. Before the American Social Science Convention, Dr. Lincoln, of Boston, stated that the entire nation was believed to bo suffering from certain wide spread sources of nervous degeneracy. If a child inherited a susceptible constitution from excitablo parents ; if from its food in infancy iron, lime, and the phosphates were mainly excluded ; if its diet in maturer years wns very rich and very unwholesome ; if it lived in a climato exceedingly trying?at its best killing the aged by excessive cold, and the young by excessivo heat?if to these surroundings were added an atmosphere of constant emulation, impelling evory man, woman and child to personal ambition to get on in life and beat the others, then _ie result of these conditions would be t make it deviate from tho Bturdy Ai ? Saxon type of the pioneers who fo L d this country. It was the belief or writer that besides the facts noted ti: * WAR an ftnnrimioMn on/1 iiw?vnooin/v ...... amount of nervous damage done to cliildi'? ! oy tlieir school life, though ho could not pretend to give tho statistics. That " OS being dono in New York, Philadelphia and St. Louis, but he aimed simply at showing the physiological laws which governed tho subject. Ho desired to demonstrate that at present nervous harm resulted from school life, whereas it was possible to derive nervous benefit from the same things. Hero tho doctor, in illustration of those principles, cited the principles and observations of some seventy physicians. Afterward ho developed the theory of nervous action, and then cited the diseases which have been grouped under tho term " nemastlima"?debility, depression, dyspepsia, sleeplessness, irritability, headache, nose-bleed, chorea or St. Vitus' dauce, neuralgia, hysteria, irritable spine, or spinal anaemia, and moustrunl anomalies. The question before them, thon, was to divert children from these evils, and by a sounder system benefit their nerves. This, he thought, would be helped in the first place by making every school provide for a reasonable amount of physical exercise. He then went to tho consideration of the question whether brain-work was unhealthy, which he answered in the negative, on the ground that just as muscular labor increased the power and vohuno of the muscles, so brain labor increased not only the braiu power, but the nervous forces on which ' > munuiuiu iuuuuu wtus uuHomteiy dependent. If the mental mailiine was not overdriven, nature woulu develop the muscles at the some time ; that by teaching the brain was developed tc a certain extent, but not altogether, for a strong brain needed a strong pulse, and to have that tjie heart must be strengthened. This could only be done by muscular exertion, which drove blood in upon the heart, expanding, dilating and distending it. While, however, a small amount of physical exertion would be sufficient for tins, it was certain the ideas generally entertained as to that amount was erroneous. The professor went on to say that happiness was the best materia mcdica, and considered the causes of unhappiness in childron, laying down as a law that the true secret of happiness was in alternate labor and rest. Consideration of the bad effects of tea and coffee, and of overheating school rooms, closed the discourse, which was heard with great attention. The Kcilly Islands. There is a romantic story connected with the Scilly islands. It seems that a Mr. Augustus Smith, who was well known to William IV., obtained a lease of the islands, and went there to seek solace from a disappointment in love. Be this as it may, he never married. He entered Parliament, passed about live months of the year in London, and the remainder at liis home in Scilly, where he erected, at Tresco Abbey, one of the most unique, romantic and luxurious retreats which the world can show. But selfish enjoyment was by no means his aim. He desired to reform the rugged and eccentric Donulation which bad drifted to tho shores of bis little kingdom. The task proved almost as bard as the similar work which Lord Georpi Hill, with untiring patience, underto' .v at Gweedore, in the wilds of Hod *. id. It was only by dint of a most jud is admixture of firmness and co:. ! that Mr. Augustus Smith gradually yle progress, and at length compli i... ? succeeded. Ho lived to enjoy for ny years the result of his work? to an industrious, jenergetic and tlui'-mg population around him, whoso ohiidiva went out to the mainland and to the colonies to mako their way?for he fought against over-population. At his death, about three years ago, Tresco passed to his relative, Mr. Smith Dorrien. Uudor Mr. Smith's management the Scillys have probably quintupled in value, and will form a splendid addition to the revenues of the Prince of Wales, when they once more return to the Duchy on the expiration of the lease. Mr. Smith first taught the people to appreciate their neighbor?the Gulf Stream, which brings them balmy breezes long before they reach Northern and Eastern England, and thus Scilly gradually became nn important purveyor of early vegetables for the London market, and Covent Garden puts thousands into the pockets of the people. Good comes out of evil, and Mr. Smith's unlucky love affair has been the making of Scilly. .i ran-?it?-? vnto iwr lirulUCKNi Bismarck teaches good lessons, but ho hart rough ways of doing it.
