thereafter, he received from the 9ame Democratic Adminisiiation the Brevet rank of Major General, anil ihe highest rank he could obtain without a vacancy. To pi-ovule a new office for him. a Dcnu.ccitic , Congress increased the number of Major Generals, and the first innn appointed loilie full rank, under the new General Taylor. General Taylor \> us elected President. Because of his supposed availability,Gen. Taylor was selected as the. candidate of the Whigs for President, ami because of hisserviccs in the field, and under (he belief his election would deeper stamp with infamy the vile slanderers of their country during he war with Mexico, many Democrats relying on his solemn pledges that he would never lend himself to party schemes, voted for him for President, and hy their aid he carried Pennsylvania, and was elected President. His first official act was to call around him a Cabinet of the bitterest purtizans in the country?men who hnd opposed the country during the war, and lent aid and comfort to the enemy. His second act was to repudiate all his pledges, and allow the Cabinet thus selected, to commence the most ruthless proscription ever waged by bold and reckless politicians?descending even to the lowest offices, making the holding of democratic sentiments n crime, tho punishment for which was dismissal froin public service. Forgetful of his pledges? forgetful of his honor, Gen. Taylor forgets ?vrp*ment ho received from the lust liccupon him because he lougtu tile DUrtlCiS of his country,. V .. "^W'????????
