'J he Governor does not in timate the amount which would proba bly be necessary, but the Statu Demo cratic Executive Committee has appeal ed to the legislature lor an appropriation of $10,000 for tli is purpose. We hope the legislature will provide adequately for this purpose, but wo hardly think that $10,000 will be neces sary. THE Here Is what Governor Thompson says : "I niu informed that proceedings have been and will be instituted against some of the election officers of this State at the term of thc.Clreu't Court of the Uni ted States beginning on the fourth Mon day of the present month, nnd that it Is alleged In some, If not In all, of the cases that the election officers are to be tried for violations of Federal lnvvg because of their discharge of duUea imposed upon them by the Stale. In 8t,ieh cases the action of the State Is on trial In the per- 1 sons of her officers, and the State should assume control of their defense. It Is none the less the duty of the State to de fend her officers when persecuted In the, Fedeaal Courts for alleged violations of her laws, for the punishment of which ' the machinery of her own Courts Is full and ample. ^ have no information as to the nurcber of clHcers to be tried or of the probable cost of their defense, but I earnestly recommend that provision be made promptly for the payment of what ever expenses may l>e Incurred In the de fense of all officers who shall be prosecu ted in the Federal Courts for offenses, wheth-er against Federal or Suite laws, which they are charged with committing In the performance of duties required of 'hemby the State or under color of their offices." Thk study of geography, which to many pupils In our public schools is ren dered dry and uninteresting, is made at tractive and pleasing by some of the teachers In the Connecticut and Massa chusetts schools, by reading aloud in the class suitable articles from the dally pa pers, and requiring the young students to h>cate on the mnp of Kuropo or of the United States, as tho case may be, the places where tho events mentioned oc curred. Under this wlso arrangement tho call for the geography class Is always hoard with pleasure, and the half hour i dovoted to the lensou passes all too quick ly for the now Interested pupils, instead of dry technic# and names of places, with which they are required to lumber the memory, some Interesting or stirring oveut fixes the looation, the people, their hl|fory, manners and oustoms InefFace ably upon tho mind.
