It will afford a most delightful drive of about a mile, and when the bridge Is completed and the road on the other side of tho river is finished, driving parties will have a splendid drive of iibout four miles. The Idea Is, at some time lu tho near future, to plant a row o( shade trees on either side of the roud. Important lo Teachers. The following resolution has been ad opted by the State Board of Examiners: Jlcsolctd: That the examination of Teachers before County Boards of Ex aminers shall include a series of ques tions upon the theory ?fc practice of teach ing: uud that "Methods of teaching" by Johu Swett, and "Art ol School Man agement" by J. Baldwin be rccomnion ded us books of reference. In compliance with the terms of tills resolution, tho examination papers for Jaiiuary, 1884, will Include a scries of questions upou the Theory and Practice of Teaching. Street Improvements. Our town council is showing itself very active In the Improvement of our streets. In no line of Improvements can Council benefit the town more largely than iu planting trees. For beauty, health, pleasure nud permanence, no Improve ment will equal the trees. This is the best period of the ytenr for such improve ment, nud at u comparatively small cost, all our streets might be beautifully shaded. Let us have the trees. The work now bcingdoueon the streets deserves more thnn a passing mention. Lyttleton street and DcKalb street have recently been wonderfully improved and are now splendid thoroughfares. A well-built culvert has been placed at the intersection of Broad and DeKalb streets, ami hereafter tho water from upper Broad aud east DcKalb streets will he conveyed through this culvert ton ditch, which will carry It from town. Council has done exceedingly well in the work upon the streets, tind ( hle'f Whltaker has uuiungcd tho work admi rably. Postal Affairs. The Postimister-Gcnernl suggests to the public that lu sending newspapers, books, pamphlets, etc., the address be placed upon the article inside, so that In case the wrapper should by nccldcnt he torn oil', it would be possible lo deliver the articles. Postal notes jumped at once Into pop ular favor lu Philadelphia, and the banks of that city so far huvo accepted thetn as so much cash. Wo notice a paragraph going the rounds of the press to the effect that drop letters are now, since the 1st lust., sub leot to 2 cents postage. This Is an error. They pro subject to only one cent pos tage, as hetecofore, except at delivery of fices, where the postage Is two eonta. Requisitions upon the Postoffice De partment by postmasters for the new two cent stamps are so largo that the contractors are unable to supply the de mand, aud the Department consequent ly is reducing tho amounts called for In the requisitions. The contractors at Kresent are able to furnish one and a alf million stamps dally, but this is much less thnn the number demanded. Facts for Farmers. Those who placed the cotton crop for 1882-83 nt seven million bales were near ly right, for the final sinning up shows that there were 0,002,234 bales mmlc. As early as iltu time of Alexander II of Scotland, a man who w ould lot weeds go to seed on a farm was declared to he the King's enemy. hi Denmark far mers are compelled to destroy all weeds on their premises. In Franco a man nv?y prosecute his neighbor for damages who permits weeds to go to seed which niHy endanger neighboring lands. Later advices from the North west state that tho Injury to the corn crop from frost Is not so serious as at first reported. Tho damage is estimated at not more than from 10 to 15 per cent. Even with this discount It is asserted that the corn crop of this year will be larger by 300, 000,000 than It was last year. It Is beginning to appear that the cot ton crop In Texas will not ho so much of a /allure as was expected a few weeks ?go. It Is not Improbable that tho same kind of reports will come from otliei cot ton States before the end of this mouth. It is so dry In some sections of East Tennessee that whole acres of pasturage have been bnrneil over from sparks from locomotives. Not a half crop of any thing lias been raised in that section. Ohio's oat crop is ten million bushols ahead of last year. Crops in Union county nro worso than feared, many farmers oidy awatlng rain to plow up their fields and sow oats, liottom corn la the only comfort. Now England farmers aro worse off than Southern planters. They have not only been ruined by drought, but deso lated by forest fires. Flat Rock.
