Plaining Cora?Proper Distance, &c Messrs Editors?In 1852 I made an experiment in planting Corn, the result of which gave to the readers of the Cultivator. Tha experiment, satisfied my mind, beyond a doubt as to the distance c?r? should he planted, ii this climate. But "Broomsedge,"noticing nr communication, replied to it, and remarked tha "one experiment by no meanssettled theques tion." Believing him to he a scientific, as wel as a practical planter, I concluded, after read ing his opinion, to try the experiment again which I did the past year, and the result wa: tuch as to dispel any cloud of doubt which ma) have floated through my mind heretofore, rela tive to the best mode of planting corn. The experiment I made in 1852, was made on rich land well manured, which proved, that 3 by 3 feet, one stalk to the hill, was the best mode of planting corn, having made 6(3 1-2 bushels per acre; while the 1st and 2d lots, planted 4 by 4 feet, two stalks to the hill, and 4 by 2 feet, one stalk to the hill, made each G2 1 2 bushels per acre. I experimented last year by planting the same way, as to distance, (with another plan added, as suggested by Ur. ;v l>. Cloud, <>17.: 6 feet by 21 inches, one stalk to the hill,) but on thin land, (wha't we call thin land?Middle Georgians would call it rich) with a handful of cotton seed to each hill. It was all cultivated alike?plowed three times, and hoed twice. We suffered much last year from drougth, which will account, as well as the thin land, for the falling ofT as the yield per acre, from 1852. The result of last year's experiment was as follows: 1st. Seed planted 5 feet by 21 inches, one stalk to the hill; yield 29 1-4 bushels per acre 2d. Planted seed 4 by 4 feet, two stalks ir the hill; yield 29 1-4 bushels?same as above per acre. 3d. Planted seed 4 by 2 feet, one stalk; yield per acre 32 1-2 bushels. 4th. Planted seed 3 by 3 feet, one stalk to the hill; yield per acre 39 bushels. On a 50 acre field, the 3 by 3 system, one stalk to the hill, would yield 100 barrels more than the 1st and 2d lots, and 50 barrels inor? than the 3d lot?which is worth experimenting for. This is the last experiment I ever expect t< make in planting of corn in this climate?bu should be pleased to hear from others?as nv motto is, as well as your own Messrs. It grows more like cotton than anything else , I know of, only it is much larger, and the ' branches riot so horizontal. The leaves are very large and beautiful and 1 taking it all together, it is the most beautiful and rich plant i ever saw. Utility.?The stalks and leaves make per haps the finest hav in the world?stock preferring it to any other?and yielding a greater abundance than any other. The hay and pea together, is a better and far cheaper feed than can be inised from anything cl-e in the Tinted | State-; for horses,mules, cattle, sheep and h<?g>. I believe 1 can raise more and better feed I for in) stock from one acre of land, than I can j from five of any thing I know of. It will grow I on land so poor that it would produce little or nothing else; and tolerably p -orland is better I for it, ami will produce more than rich land, j This may appear strange to some, but it is lie- j vprtheless tiee. As an improver of the soil I j consider it far superior to clover, or any tiling j known in Tennessee, when fed of]* on the i ground and then plowed in. Now, brother farmers, it is known to us all, : that w? need something, verv much to supply j the place of corn that has exhausted our lands until they are well nigh worn out. In some few cases, however, where proper care was not had to prepare it properly, before applying, or where too liberal closes have been given, its effects have been, as might naturally be expected from such an oversight, disastrous. Put the lumps into a heap, moist them with a strong solution of salt and water, and let them remain a day in the bull;, when they may easi ly be reduced to powder by the back of a shovel.
