The steamer George Law arrived at New York to-day from Aspiiuvail with nearly a million of gold. Among the passengers was a portion of the party engaged in the survey ol the canal route oil the Isthmus of Daricn. The Season of Lent. The first of March, being Ash Wednesday, began the religious seasons of Lent among Roman Catholics and Episcopalians, which is a period of fasting and church attendance almost every day, for six weeks, in commommoration of the forty days fast of the Saviour in the wilderness previous to and in connection with his final crucifixion, and subsequent resurrection three days after. It thus embraces the "passion of Christ," the last week of Lent being what is called 'Holy Week,' with the ceremonies of Holy Thursday and Good Friday, emblematic of the Saviour's death and burial on the latter day, when there is temporarily erected in the Catholic churches, a highly | adored altar, indicative of the place of the- Sep ulchre?the whole closing with the jubilant period of Easter Sunday, (the next Sundav following,) when he 'arose from the dead." and the fast is over. Lent is a fast intended in prepare christians for the Easter festival. Pro testants generally consider Lent as not having been established before the second 01 thiol century; hut the Catholic church maintains, with St. Jerome.
