Butler, aud Messrs. Mealing. Sbaw, Butler, Porter and M/iKie, appointed to wait on Qov. Chamberlain, in order to endeavor to induce him to take action in the inte? rest of peace and good order in Edg* field County. Ou the 5th of the pre? sent month this committee called on Gov. Chamberlain, at Columbia, the capital of the State of South Carolina. They represented that Tennant, the military oaptaio. bad recently marched his eompany to E Igt field Court House and recovered the arms, with many ronnds of ammunition, which they had been made to give up some time ago. He had instituted drills and wbb march? ing about the oonntry, mostly at uigbt, and all night in the Currytown neigh? borhood. Alarm had spread in all di? rections. A. public meeting had beeu held, and this committee appointed to represent the danger to the Qovernor, and to request that ho issue an order to have the arms Withdrawn and placed in safe keeping. Judge Carpenter was present at the interview, and pro nounoed the retention of the arms be longing to the State by the militbtineu as out'Warranted by law and a viola? tion of the -public petlce. Governor Chamberlain thankful the Committee for the ]gohr& Jurlgruent and a"leoretfon of their acfiHn, and prom&bd to issue an order to Tennant and his company to return the arms without delay. The whole proceeding bad been entirely without bis knowledge or consent. The committee retired satisfied with what the Governor' skid, and gratified at the success of their mission. Mark the revolt. Tennant determined to be revenged, and accordingly devised an atrooioos plot, of Which Gen. Botler, the chairman of the committee, waa to be the victim. On the bight of the 13th instant, while Gen. Butler was in Augusta, his residende in Edgefleld1 County, about sixteen miles from this city, was destroyed by fire. The Gene? ral's wife and ohiidreo, who were asleep at the time, barely eacaped with their lives.' Everything in the house was oonsumed. Giroumstanees pointed unerringly to the fsot that an incendiary had been at work. A pile of ligbtwood shavings and other com? bustible msterials found under one comer of the burning building, showed bow the fire bad been oommnniaated. A negro man bad been seen lurking abont the premises during tbe day aud sospioion was st onoe directed to him. On tbe night of the 15th a party of gentlemen called at the bonse of the suspected negro, who, however, fled at their approach. Several shots were fired at him, but apparently with? out effect. He was afterwards arrested and confessed that he hsd set fire to Gen. Butler's bouse, having beeu hired to do so by Ned Tennant. Upon thin information Gen. Butler had a war? rant issued Monday for Tennant's ar? rest. Tbe warrant was placed in the bands of constables, all oolored, who {irooeeded in quest of Tennant. The atter, however, resisted, he and bis Eartisans drew their weapons on the of oers and declared their determination not to be arrested, either by white or blaek. Tbe constables appealed to Gen. Butler for aid. The General iu response to the appeal went with eight or ten of bis neighbors, Tuesday, to assist tbe officers in making tbe arrest. They searched some time for Tennant, and were finally fired upon by that despe? rado and bis adherents, who were in ambush at the roadside. Ues. Butler and his party returned tbe fire, and the negroes fled, succeeding in making their escape. One of the shots fired by the negroes struok a tree over Gen. Butler's head. Tennant was seen among the party in ambnsb. Tuesday night, as Mr. Joseph Merriwetber was leaving Dr. McKte's hou?e, ten or fif? teen shots were tired at him. Dr. Mo Kie himself was called to some negroes who were wounded in tbe skirmish re? ported sbove. On bis return be re? ported that he had seen three wounded negroes, two of whom were mortally hurt. As he aas returning along the highway, he was fired opon twice. One of the balls went through bis pants near tbe hip, and the other struck hia horse back of the saddle, seriously wounding the animal. When it is re? membered that Dr MoKie had gone to see tbe negroes at their own request, and th -1 it was on his return from this errand of meroy, that bis life was put in such danger by the friends of the wounded men, the ssvage oharaoter of Tennant and hia adherents stand out in bold relief.
