He has managed in some way to get and keep posses? sion of the old court house property, and holds it in defiance of the people of the town to whom it belongs, claim? ing it as his own. He tried to poison the horses which were accustomed to being hitched to the fence of the court house yard by poisoning tho white? wash. The other evening he gave his consent to some kind of an exhibition being shown in the old Clerk's oflice; bat then, as if the natural perversity c! the men wsts forced to seek some ontlet, ho locked the gate of tho court honse yard, so as to prevent the ladies from going up the paved walk, aud compelled them to wade through an alley filled with tho oudure of cattle and horses. Fiudmg there was scarcity of wuter, occasioned by the protracted drought, aud that the water in the well of the public property bad become u necessity to the people of the town, ho locked up tho well to prevent them from using it, although it wu9 then deep with water, and tho people had ulways boon accus? tomed to uae it. On Wednesday night, n number cf young nieu determined to break off the lock. Dr. Elliott seemed to have been governed in his act by no other motive tban a morbid desire to hill Homo one. He lay in wait for them, and upon their approach, etimo from his ambush aud commenced, withoat warning, to fire upou them with a revolver. To prevent being shot tho young men closed with him, and in the struggle he tried his host and nearly succeeded in shooting ono of them through the houd. At lust he was thrown upou the ground, und the pistol, with which ho tried to commit murder, was tukeu from him, und he was thou released.
