Scott, Nuwberry. H. W. Lawson, Abbeville. The people of Iceland for a thousand years have been famed for their simple virtues and a civilization and learning, strangely in contrast with the bleak desolation of their rugged island. The national character was strikingly dis? played in their celebration of their millennial anniversary, which began on the 2d ultimo, continuingBoveraldays. Tho Republic of Iceland was first or? ganized in ttVi, so that this year com? pletes the millennium of its national exiatence. Tbo ancient Republic was betrayed to Norway in 1211, and pass? ed under it;; rale in 1264. By tbo union of Denmark and Norway in 13S0, it* sovereignty passed to Den? mark, where it has since continued, and the feeling of loyalty is very strong among the Icelanders, although they detest the Danes. The millennial anniversary wob Bignalized by a visit of Sing Christian of Denmark and the promulgation of a new constitution, by which Iceland secures local inde? pendence and release from tho taxa? tion of Denmark. Tho first day's cel? ebration consisted of a visit by the King to the cathedral iu Reikiavik, where, after a sermon, a noble anthem, both music and Words composed by Icelanders in honor of the day, was sung with remarkable power and sweetness, the emotions of the audi? ence responding to the words, so that tears of joy flowed down their obeeks. Later in the day a banquet to the Ring was given, in which he gave the first toast to the honor of old Iceland in the true Norse style. Ab he touch? ed the goblet to his lips the cannon boomed and the people cheered. In the evening tho people of town gath? ered at a hill near by, and songB and speeches closed the day. Bayard Tay? lor contributed a flne'ode, "America to Iceland," which was rendered into Icelandic by one of their poets and sung on tha occasion. For several days the celebration continued, mark? ed throaghoat by a dignity and sim? plicity surrounding it with more true grandeur than could have been con? veyed by tbo greatest pomp or elabo? ration of display. An Ancient Ceremony Revived.? On Sunday evening, an unusually in? teresting service was held in thoWiue brennarian Church, on Townsentl street, Philadelphia, Rev. S. Woods, pastor, during which tbo ordinance of feet-washing was attended to with due solemnity. This is tho only de? nomination that now observes this custom, which was so common among tho early Christinns. The bouse was packed fall, even the aisles were seated, and yet many had to go away on ac? count of there being no place to stund. After the oloseof the sermon the pastor announced that the ordinance of feet washing would be attended to. He pointed to tbo instances recorded in the saored writings of its observance, and to the oommund not to neglect it. It was a symbol of the meekness and lowliness of the Christian, merely a monumental institution, the observ? ance of which has a tendency to make them more bumble and meek in the presence of God. Those desiring to participate in tho observance of the ordinaucu occupied front Beats, uud were waited upon by a brother uud sister, who each took u pail of watur, and an apron, mo.-e after the stylo of an ancient girdles, served the purpose J of a towel. One by one they bathed j the feet of each und dried them with thegirdlo. Each were saluted with u kiss, both mule aod female, and the ancient custom followed iu every par? ticular. . We ofteu hear of people who uru too poor to marry, but a Califojuia couple, who bad been engaged for bodio time, married because they could not afford to keep two separate rooms in a board? ing boase.
