Gold to-day is quoted 292, and will undoubtedly roach 1,000 if speedy and supremo efforts are not made to check the rise. Rites of foreign exchange, like those of gold, are also going up indefinitely. This upward movement, if continued, will soon bring about general bankruptcy, and will make the oost of necessaries of life so that the people will be nnable to endure its oonBequenoes. This deplorable state of things would be incalculable. It is the duty of all to try to prevent it on this aoooant, and for the above rea? sons, we ask for the imposition of a tax of five per cent, on tbe riches of the island represented by. landed pro? perty in the city and country, and by commercial and banking institutions and others, to be paid quarterly for two years, beginning7 with July 1, 1874. It is hoped that at the end of this period the war will be oonoladed, and there will be no further necessity for extreme measures. The subscribers of the above documents pledge them? selves to pay their part of tbe tax, and anxiously await a decree levying the same and making the necessary provi? sion for enforcing its oolleotioc. This is regarded as an experiment on a small scale to familiarize the Indians with self-government uuder fatura ter? ritorial organization. A semi-annual dividond of five per cent, has been passed to the surplus fund. This speaks well both for the trade of Fairfield and for the financial I ability displayed by the gentlemen in charge. During the whole of the panic lest year, the bank was firm and kept up the price of cotton one or two I cents per pound.? Winnsboro Neics. The Senatorial contest in Rhode Island, though prolonged until it has become absurd, never had any signifi? cance. It is in no way a struggle for party or prinoiple, but a fight between half a dozen common place people over a seat in the United States Senate. The whole trouble consists in the fact that there is a determination to defeat General Burnside, but no clear pur? pose of elooting any other candidate. [New York Herald. A Free Fight Among Polioemen.? On Tuesday, a number of Brooklyn, IN. Y., policemen, who were detailed to preserve order at a Sunday school pic-nic, got into a row among them? selves in regard to the custody of a prisoner. A free fight ensued, pistols were exhibited, clubs used, and the excitement was iotense. The Sunday school scholars got very much alarmed, and there was a general break up of the whole affair. Doctors Differ.?A Now York State Prohibition Convention met at Auburn, N. Y., Tuesday, and de? manded for New York the re-enact? ment of the Maioe luw. A late Maine convention demanded its repeal for Maine, on tho ground that it helped on drunkeoncbs more than a lair license law does, and now a Vermont convention endorses that of Maine.
