If Louisiana ia not blecssd with the best public eohool system aod the best educated children in the United States, it is not from the want of a very ex pensive eaperintendecoj. Mr. William G. Brown, State Superintendent of Publio Education in that State, offloially reports that pf the 9551,460 oaah dis? bursed in 1870, $9,000 was for the su? perintendent's salary, office rent, travel lag and contingent -expenses; $12,500 Was for salaries of five division superin? tendents, and $3,000 for their contin? gent expenses; $4,000 was for Superin? tendent Boothby, inolnding $600 for his contingent expenses; $2,500 for Booth by's secretary. It would seem from these figures that the ohief object of the Louisiana school system is to provide places for the superintendents, with their sp.nrntAriAd and mpownoprR. There is a woman in Nor walk? Conn, the wife of a seaman making regular trips botween New York and Liverpool, who has not seen her husband for nine? teen years. Every time bo? ships from New York he writes to her that be will visit her on his next arrival in that city, but as often.as he arrives he gets drunk, loses his money and is shipped on board the packet again. K Gkrmant.?The Prussian- Govern? ment has divided among the States of the German Empire 42.000,000 thalers. This is another part of the French in? demnity.. Somehow Germany does not seem to have had much good oot of that money; for we hear constantly of fin uncial embarrassments and threatened panics, while France seems to be un? usually easy and prosperous. A body was recently disinterred in Ban gor, Ma., which weighed seventeen pounds more than when buried five years before. It was bb perfect iu shape and feature as when buried, and "its 'entire surface seemed to be overlaid with a marble-like enamel, white and clear as alabaster." In Paris a railway tunnel passes under Pere le Chaise Cemetery. It showed signs of insecurity and was braced; but finally the masonry gave way and about forty graves went with the wreok, mixing bones beyond the possibility of assort? ment. * A Kansas paper thinks Illinois legis? lators have their brains at the wrong j end, inasmuch as they wear No. 4 hats | and No. 11 boots.
