Lying low in the gutter, Degraded and black with ein, With garments tattered and filthy, More shattered and font within. His face has grown ugly and brutal, And lost is each trace divine; The reign of hia passionjjLbad made him Companion alone for tue swine. ??He is too far gone," they tell us, All they who pass him by; "Impossible now to reach him," f So he is left to sink and die. He was once "somebody's darling," That man so degraded and vile, And the heart of some one that loved him Was once made glad by his smile. Those lips that now breathe but crushing, A mother's kiss once pressed, And that hair, ouco soft and golden, A Bister's hand caressed. Those eyes, now blear and soulless, Once lighted with love's bright glow, And the fire of the soul within them, Burned with thoughts that angels know. Let yonr tear-drops fall, of pity Upon thoso darkened leaves, Resting here?"Possible all things," AH, "to him that believes." Friends of temperance, this is -your . mission, # Strong in love's power to save, With a sympathy earnest, untiring, Go, bring him up from the grave! A Skeleton Witness.?At LernBter, Maine, the trial of James M. Lowell for the murder of his wife, in 1870, is in progress. In the course, of the trial the skeleton of the unfortunate viotim was exhibited, whioh sent a thrill of super? stitious horror through the throng of men and women present. The prisoner viewed the skeleton witness with indif * ference, showing not the least sign of remorse, regret or other human feeling. A similar case occurred at the trial of j. W. Davis (recently executed) for the murder of Abraru Lynn, whioh took piaee at nagarniuwu, ma., wuen tue skull of the victim was produced and ex ut?ivcu tO til 6 jui'j. One might write a column obituary notice on an office-holder, and then not equal the brief announcement in an Iowa paper: "Harvey Jackson, County Treasurer, is dead. He was lenient with the widowed, and his books always balanced." Boston has one colored policeman? j and only one. South Carolina Monument Associa- j noN.?The monument proposed to be erected by the women of South Caro-1 iina, in memory of their gallant dead in the late Confederate war,- has been de- j layed in its oompletion by want of the necessary funds. The cost of the monu? ment will be $10,000; tho first install? ment of $5,000 has be-?n already paid to the distinguished architects, Muldoon & Co., of Rontuoky, who are proceeding with the monument, whioh, when finished, will be a noble and beautiful tribute to onr deceased soldiers. It is requisite that $5,000 shall be raised by Ootober next, to complete this sum of $10,000. This can be easily obtained, if each District will pledge itself to give $200, and if every individual who re? ceives one of theso circulars will send the small snm of Si. Let n treasurer and collectors bo appointed in every vil? lage and city, and let tho money collect? ed by these local treasurers be promptly forwarded to the General Treasurer, Mrs. W. R. Bacbman, at Columbia. If the ladies in these Districts will give the matter their earnest attention, we are convinced that they will soon secure the amount repuired. Surely nono will re? fuse to aid in perpetuating tho memory of those who counted not their lives dear that they might save the land they Wved bo well; and though tho caufie they died (or be lost, all is not lost, so long as their grand epitaph, "They died for their principles," whether engraven An marble or on the tablets of our hearts, shall contain for us and for future gene? rations inspiration and hope. Mrs. W. R. DaCHMAN, Treasurer S. O. Monument Assoo'n. Mrs. JOHN T. DARBY, Correspondiug Secretary. Miss MARTIN, Recording Seoretary. Board or Directors.?The officers of the Association and Mrs. C.
