The following sublime and affecting production was discovered among the remains of our great epic poet, and is published in a recent Oxford edition of Milton's works: I tftn old and blind! Men point at me as smitten by Qod's frown, Afflicted and deserted of my kind; Yet I am not cost down. I am weak, yet strong; I murmur not that I no longer see, Poor, old and helpless, I the more be? long, Father supreme, to Thee. 0 Merciful One I When men are farthere?t, then Thou art most near; When friends pass by mo and my weak? ness shnn, Thy ohariot I hear. Thy glorious face la leaning toward me, and its holy light Shines in upon my lonely dwelling place? And there i'b no more night. On my bended knees, I recognize Thy purpose clearly shown; My vision Thon hast dimmed, that I may see Thyself?Thyself alone. 1 have naught to fear; This darkness is the shadow of Thy Beneath it I am almost saored; hero Can oome no evil thing. Ohl I seem to stand Trembling where foot of mortal ne'er hath been, Wrapped in the radiance of Thy sinless land, Which eye hath never seen. Visions oome and go? Shapes of resplendent beauty round mo throng; From angel lips I seem to hear the flow Of soft and holy song. Is it nothing now, When Heaven iB opening on my sight? less eyes? When airs from Paradise refresh my brow mi.._IL I? j..V?_m i:?, 0 In a purer olime, My being fills with rapture?waves of thought Boll in npon my spirit?strains bublime Break over mo unsought. Give me now my lyre I I feel the stirrings of a gift divine, Within my bosom glows unearthly fire, Lit by no skill of mine. Sooth Carolina Monument Associa? tion.?The monument proposed to be erected by the women of South Caro? lins, in memory of their gallant dead in the late Confederate war, has been de? layed in its completion by want of the necessary funds. Tho cost of tho monu? ment will be $10,000; tho first install? ment of 85,000 has been already paid to the distinguished architects, Moldoon & Co., of Kentooky, who nro proceeding with the monument, which, when finished, will bo a noblo and beautiful tribute to our deoeased soldiers. It is requisite that $5,000 shall be ruiscd by Ostober next, to complelo this sum of $10,000. This can bo easily obtained, if each District will pledge itself to givo $200, and if every individual who re? ceives one of theso circulars will send tho small sum of $1. Let n treasurer and collectors be appointed iu every vil? lage and city, and let tho money collect? ed by theso looal treasurers bo promptly forwarded to tho General Treasurer, Mrs. W. K. Bachman, at Columbia. If the ladies in thoso Districts will givo tho matter their earnest attention, wo are convinced that they will hood secure the amount repnired. Surely none will re fose to aid in perpetuating the memory of those who counted net their lives dear that they might save the hind they loved bo well; and though tho cause they died for bo lost, oil ia not lost, so long as their grand epitaph, "They died for their principles," whether engraven on marblo or on tho tablets of our hearts, Bhall contain for us aud for future gene? rations inspiration and hope. tons, w.
