His party were defeated as soon as landed, and he shipped in a, whaler to Australia. Thence he went to ' Oaliao, Peru, and finally opened a gam? bling saloon on one of the Chin oh a Islands. In one of them he killed an attaohee of the British "Legation, and was therefor arrested and kept in prison for twenty-six months, when, through the efforts ofjbewis Gass, Secretary of State, he was released.
