. Franklin recently died in New Orleans,
having .run a career snob aa few men
would oare to be debtors to. He was
born, in Albany, in tbo year 1826, and
was called Ju'uu Murray, but rsoon took
bis step-father's name. Ho was com?
pactly built, handsome, and a thorough
sporting man, to whom Cincinnati, New
Orleans and St. Louis have been indebt?
ed for some of their notorious prize
fights.
Before he arrived of age, ho became a
professional gambler and adventurer.
Forced .to leavo Buffalo when only
eighteen, on account of a fight with a
negro, whose skull ha fractured, he went
jthrough Central America to California,
"embarking thence on the schooner Game?
cock for a fillibnstering adventure in
Honolulu. His party were defeated as
soon as landed, and he shipped in a,
whaler to Australia. Thence he went to '
Oaliao, Peru, and finally opened a gam?
bling saloon on one of the Chin oh a
Islands. Ho circulated freely among the
oitiee of Peru, frequently getting in?
volved in deBpexato frays. In one of
them he killed an attaohee of the British
"Legation, and was therefor arrested and
kept in prison for twenty-six months,
when, through the efforts ofjbewis Gass,
Secretary of State, he was released.
Sinoo then he has been engaged in gam?
bling and fighting in the United States.
Burdened with consumption for the last
ten years, he has kept oh his feet and
been; ready for 1 any excitement. In
July lust, he was taken to St. Paul
packed in cotton for a change of climate.
It did! him do good* and he was taken to
New Orleans, where a short timo ago, he
went to his long account.
While it is very true that much of the
brandy whioh is sold in this country at

is equally true that a good deal of im?
ported liquor is but little if any hotter
than the worst of tho adulterated atuff
whioh is fixed up by American dealers
possessed of more, entcrpriso than
honesty, and palmed off on a crodulous

iverpool Assizes recently, a wino and
spirit merchant of Liverpool brought
aotion against another denier for refus?
ing to reooive, according to agreement,
twelve quarter casks of Oognae brandy,
28. 6d. a gallon, and 1C0 oases of brandy
at 9s. a case, "free on board." Tho de?
fence was that tho price was too high.
