Down the dim voiceless valley-i-alone; And I hear not tho fall of a foot-stop Around me?save God's and my own; And the hush of my heart 1b aB holy As hovers when angola have ilown. Long ago?I waa weary of voices, Whose musio my heart could not win; Long ago?I was weary of noises That frotted my soul with their din; Long ago?I was weary of placeB Whore I mot but the human?and ein. I walked thro' tho world with tho worldly; I craved what tho world never ?avo; And I said: "In tho world, each ideal That shines like a star on lifo'o wave, Is tossed on the shores of the real, And alcopa like a dream in tho grave." And still did I pine for tho perfect, And still found tho false with the true; I sought 'mid the human for Heaven, Bat I caught a mere glimpse of Its bluo, And I wept when the clouds of mortal Yelled even the glimpoe from my view. And I toiled on, heart-tired of the human; And I moaned 'mid the massoB of men; Till l kneit long at an altar And hoard a vcice call me?Bince then I walked down the valley of silenco That lies far beyond mortal Hen. Do yoa aak what I found in tho valloj? 'Tis my trvating placo with tho Divine; An?11 fell at tho feet of tho Holy And above me a voico said, "Bo mine;" And then rope from thu depius o* my spirit An eoho, "My heart shall be thine." Do you ask how I livo in the valley? I weep?and I dream?and I pray? But my tears are aa sweet as the dew-drops That fall on the roses of May; And my pray'r, like a perfume from censors, Aecoiideth to God night and day. In the hush of the valley of silence I dream of all the songs that I sing; And tho musio floats down the dim valley Till each finds a word for a wing. That to men, like tho dove of the Dolugo, The message of poaoe they may bring. But far on tho deop there are billows That nevor ehalt break on the beach; And I have heard eongB in the silenco That never ahall float into speech; And I have had dreams in the valley Too lofty for languago to roach. And I have seen thoughta in the valley? Ahl mo, how my spirit waa stirred! And they wear the holy veils on their faces; And their footsteps can scarcely bo heard, They pass through the valley like virgins, Too pare for the touch of a word. Do you ask mo the place of the valley. Ye hearta that are narrowed by care? It lleth far away between mountains, And God and his angels aro there; And one is tho dark mount of sorrow, > -. .i ->..,, . i.? t._;?i.i n? nrmmtir AUU WUU ?.UU IS. . f, .. V ... u ...... i. 11. ^? A .?J V. . An Adventurous Salt Lake Girl.? In this oity lives a young lady who is seemingly delicate, but although petite iu form and figure is abundantly en? dowed with nervo and energy. Fond to a pasBion of tho grand in nature, she has scaled on foot tho highest peaks of tho Cottonwoods, and explored tho ca? vernous recesses of the deepest mines. We havo known her on several occasions when prospecting on foot, with staff in hana, the lull peuko of the "Wasaich, to compel her malo escort first to cry halt. Our fair pr03peotreBs being at Alta a day or two since, saw for the first time in operation the wire suspension tramway just comploted by the Vullejo company, and her masculine escort proposed to her, in jest, to take a ride np the wire cable to the miue. She promptly ac? cepted the invitation, when our male friend, growing a littlo nervons, sug? gested difficulties in the way of the trip, but failed to dissuado her from attempt? ing it. The tramway is 2,380 feet long, rises at an angle of about twenty degrees, and the cable is suspondod on stanchions forty feet high. There wero no other carriages than oro buckets, and in one of these, which aro suspended six feet below the cable, cur heroine, undaunted and alone, took passago, and made the asceut without mishap or serions incon? venience, ulthough tho swaying of the wire between tho stanchions is calculated to create the Bcnsation of sea-sickness. Quite a crowd gathered, and to those a short distance off, to whom the wire was invisible, it appeared as if our fair friend was Builing through mid-air. [Salt Lake Herald, Grant's Desire to re a Confederate Cat-tain.?Tho Louisvillo Courier-Jour? nal states authoritatively that Ulysses S. Grant was on applicant for a captaincy in Gen. FroBt's (Confederate) brigade, and that he did not get it for the reason that the company, by a formal vote, re? fused to elect him because of his notori? ous habits. If this be true, Mosby, when he remarked to Grant that but for the forco of ciroumstances, their posi? tions might bo revorsed, "builded wiser than ho know." But he did not know what were tho oircumstaucos. Bonds for Sale.
