I looked around for the troubled darno And oailed her out by her given nemo, (For I did not know the other;) t . And said with a sigh, whioh the crowd omltl hear, "Woman, called Hannah, if thou art noar, Approach thy Christian brother." My hearers laughed at my oarnest cry; And ''Put a shanty over bis eye!" Cried some, in mocking fashion; Dat I j)aid no heed to ibo scoffing few "Ilanpab, my sister, I call for you ? In love-not wrath or paaaion. "Como, then, to the alt ir, oh, child. of wot I" Then spoke another, "Not any for Joe;" I wondered at bim, slightly. And ssid, "Oh, Joseph, tho noah 'is weak; It makes me tremble to hear yon sneak Ol,holy thin}?s so lightly." J, * Then, up from tho heathen, came a cry Of "Bat!$ ? old follow," -How's that for high?" It fsirly made me shiver; And I trembled in heart, as well as in limb, f Aa they fiendishly screamed, "Put a head on him. Jim, And pitch him into tho rivei !" To this ! answered, "Never 1" And started home, as they would not yield, And I had neither sword nor shield That might defend my banner; And to-day I sigh for tho ?lough of sin Which one poor woman is working in, Whoso given np.me ii Hannah. How TO LIVE CHEAPLY.-Dr. Dio Lewis relates how he lived for a week on food that cost fifty-four and a quarter cents. He worked hard meantime, and gained half a pound. He took two meals a day. The following are specimen ones: Sunday, breakfast-hulled Southern oom, with a little milk; dinner, the esme; total cost, six cents. Tuesday, breakfast-two couts' worth of beaus, with a half ceut's worth of vinegar. Saturday, dinner-lobster, three cents; bread, one cent; hominy salad, one oent; cracked wheat and milk, two cents. Thia day he had a "spree" -cost, seven cents. THE GREAT DISTINCTION.-A little girl of five summers was the happy recipient of a velvet cloak, of whioh she was very proud. One day, soon afterwards, she was discussing her dresses, their beauty, style, ?co., when her mother, by way of sipping her vanity in the bud, said, "My dear, do you not know there are moro important things to talk about than dresses?" Quickly she replied, "Oh, yes, mamma-velvet cloaks." G BAND OPERATIC AND BALLAD CON? CHED IN Bim ALF OF THE SOOTH CAROLINA. The general expressed deeire of ticket holdors.that a full drawing might be had, even if it made a short postponement neces? sary, ?. Tho belief of tho management that by a short postponement tho remnant of unsold tickets oau bo disposed of, and all tho prizes paid in fud, without (ho necessity of auy pro rata scaling down. For these reasons, coupled with tho earnest desire io benefit tho Publio Library by a larger balance, and the tic ko t- h old er a by larger git ts, the concert and distribution have been post' poned to Saturday, tho 7th of December, 1872.
